Today is my birthday and of course this means a party. As a visitor you will get a present today in the form of a new “The Many faces of…”. This time I’ve selected Tom Hanks. No particular reason, heard his name in some podcast and thought it would be interesting. Searching for pictures I quickly found out these were not as versatile as Samuel L. Jackson’s ones as he only started to change his appearance in later movies. This made me think what Jason Statham looks like in the various movies. I’d almost bet it would be exactly the same.
Now on to this week’s star, Tom Hanks. Going through his acting career I noticed that he played a lot of small roles in big TV shows like Family Ties, Taxi, The Love Boat and Happy Days. He started acting in 1979 in a small slasher movie called He Knows You’re Alone. It wasn’t until his role in Big that his career really took off.
What is your favorite Tom Hanks role (mine would probably be his role in Big)? Which actor/actress would you like to see in the next “The Many Faces of…”?

Love this series. And who better to host than the great Tom Hanks. Looking at his pics, he was on such a massive roll in the mid 90s.
I loved Perdition and Castaway but BIG is still one of my all time fave films!
It’s fun to do, especially seeing older images. I didn’t like Perdition myself, but Castaway was good. I’ve seen that movie a couple of times, just like Big.
One of my favourite actors. These images remind me of the many great films he has been a part of, especially the comedies of the 1980s. But what a great actor – to keep going for three decades and still making great films today. A genuinely nice guy too.
I don’t go out of my way to see his movies, but they are almost always quality films.
Happy birthday Nostra!! Many happy returns. Great choice to highlight such a versatile actor. Hard to pick which role is my fave, there are so many I like. I actually like him in rom-coms, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail… but he also blew me away in dramatic roles like Road to Perdition and Castaway. If I had to pick just one, I guess it’d be Woody from Toy Story, he voiced that character so brilliantly.
Btw, I did a similar post w/ Gerard Butler a while ago. He’s done quite a variety of roles but people aren’t aware of that.
Thanks a lot! Had a great day with some movie watching and a nice dinner.
What’s the link to your Gerard Butler one? Would love to see that!
Hi again Nostra! Well, the post was actually a b’day tribute highlighting 5 of my fave GB roles, with a photo collage of all the roles he’s done by then: http://flixchatter.net/2010/11/13/birhday-tribute-top-five-favorie-gerry-butler/
I probably should watch ‘Big’. I like him in rom coms, but the first and probably most impressive role he took for me is in ‘Forrest Gump’.
You should really do if you haven’t seen it yet. Be interested to know if it still holds up…somehow I think it will.
Happy Birthday! I’m not a huge fan of Tom Hanks, but I agree with you on Big. Growing up that was one of my favorite films.
Thanks! Yeah, I had the same thing…when you are young you want to be big and this movie showed that that isn’t everything either.
Tough choice for my fav Tom Hanks film. Looking at these images I forgot how many of his films I love. Its between Forest Gump, Big, Cast Away and Toy Story.
I just cant pick one!
I won’t force you to choose one 😉 But they are all good choices!
Joe Versus The Volcano for me, although I sometimes feel like I’m the only person who has ever seen it!
Hahaha, I was reading the title of the movie and was thinking “I haven’t watched that” and then you tell me you feel like you are the only person who has seen it 😉
Could you tell me why you love the movie so much?
Forrest Gump, Toy Story, Angels and Demons, Tom Hanks is just lovely 🙂
Angels and Demons isn’t a choice you hear often (probably because everyone seemed to hate the Da Vinci Code). You know that you can expect quality if he’s in a movie.
I thought Angels and Demons was a big improvement on the Da Vinci code 🙂
I agree that it actually was!
I really like Tom Hanks, I think it’s because I get the impression he’s a genuinely nice man so I go into his films wanting everything to work out well for him.
Favourites are Apollo 13, Big and Toy Story
Agree with you on that, he seems really cool and he almost always plays sympathetic roles. Apollo 13 is amazing, have seen that several times. Nice choices!

Happy belated birthday!
As for Tom Hanks, his best part was Forrest Gump, in my opinion. And it’s such a fantastic movie.
