Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

As stated in this week’s Monday Question about guilty pleasures I can really enjoy the Transformers movies. Although I did watch the cartoons and had some of the toys as a kid, I never had strong feelings about them. The cartoons were entertaining and it was fun transforming cars into robots, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you much about the names of the characters or even what the cartoons were about. Only thing I know is that the Autobots are good and the Decepticons aren’t. After the success of the first two Transformers movies, Michael Bay ends the trilogy with Dark of the Moon. Not much has changed really, it’s still about robots beating the crap out of each other.

Dark of the Moon uses historic events to explain why we went to the moon and what exactly happened at Chernobyl. It all has to do with Transformers. As for the story itself, it has something to do with some beacons that the Decepticons are after and of course it’s up to the Autobots to stop them. That’s as much as I understood from the movie and that’s all the story Michael Bay needs to deliver an action packed movie. Yes, it has some actors in it, but to me they really didn’t feel that important. They just drive the story to it’s big next action peace, but I really didn’t care for any of them. Some of the scenes with people just feel out of place (like Shia Labeouf meeting his parents) characters just don’t seem to be part of this universe (Frances McDormand’s character).

There is only one reason why I watch these movies and that is the action and Transformers: Dark of the Moon delivers. Especially towards the end the action was fantastic, the most memorable being one in which a group of people is trapped inside a building which is about to topple, which was very exciting to watch. Bay knows how to show it in an exciting way and it’s the reason I watch his movies (have seen almost all of them). If you can switch off your brain and enjoy mindless action, then you will be able to enjoy this movie. If you are looking for an interesting story and characters than you really should skip this one as this movie just doesn’t offer that.

Score: 7

  1. I am glad you liked this…a bit.

I thought it was OK, but at a running time of 2.30 hours it was all a bit painful by the end.If it was 90 mins I would have enjoyed it MUCH MUCH more!!

    • Yes, it ended up in Spam, bit strange that, but it’s back now! (saw you commented twice, so removed one of them)

The running time was indeed very long, but the action made up for it πŸ™‚

  2. I’ve seen the other two films but not this one. I really enjoyed the first one but the second was a bit too silly for my liking. I might give this a rent, see how it comes to the others.

  3. This is ridiculous. While I respect your opinions very, very much, I must say Transformers 2 and 3 are two of the biggest piles of shit I have ever seen. But that’s just my opinion. Glad someone enjoyed it.

    • Not surprised by your reaction. This movie to me is like a light snack, you eat it and there’s something nice in it, but deep down you know it’s bad πŸ™‚

  4. I had a lot of fun with this even though everybody hated it, which I expected. It’s a lot of fun and has some pretty impressive action sequences of epicness. I don’t think that’s a word but I think it fits some parts of this film very well. Nice review Nostra.

  5. I’m a huge fan of the movies and never shy about it. I did not like Dark of The Moon because although I love the action, the movie felt very repetitive. I would recommend Transformers the Animated Movie if you haven’t seen it, it simply is the best.

    • I probably would not enjoy the animated series anymore…I watched the Transformers movies just because they were directed by Bay, you know what you can expect there. Explosions, beautiful women and action πŸ™‚

  6. But the animated film has Eric Idle and Orson Welles in it! Michael Bay couldn’t pull that off! I’m afraid that I just thought a lot of the action was boring; actually, particularly the falling building bit, and Shia La Beouf & Josh Duhamel being flung around by Starscream – that seemed to go on for ever! I agree with Scott, if it had only been a snappy 90 min, it might have been alright, but it just went on too long.

    • I never saw the animated film, but it’s cool to know Welles was in that πŸ™‚ I’m not surprised people don’t like it, but for me it was as enjoyable as I expected and it met my low expectations.
