With the Best Actresses Relay race on its way I thought it would be a good idea to pick one of the chosen actresses for this week’s installment. Frances McDormand was born in 1957 in Chicago and was adopted by a Canadian couple and she moved around a lot with her parents. When she went to school she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theater. Her first movie role was in the Coen brother movie Blood Simple. Besides movies, she also appeared on TV, for example in the police show Hill Street Blues. She was nominated for an Oscar four times and received the statue for her role in Fargo.
Although it may be a cliched choice I thought she was amazing in Fargo and it’s probably my favorite role of hers. I also really liked her in Friends With Money (one of the only things I like about that movie) and Burn After Reading.
What’s your favorite Frances McDormand role?
Anything she does with the Coen’s. I guess it’s gotta be Fargo really!
Good choice. I didn’t know she was married to one of the brothers. Only found that out when making this post.
She was ravishing in Blood Simple.
That’s a movie I have not seen…it’s the first Coen brothers film right?
Yup. And she cheats on Dan Hedaya and gets in some trouble over it. It’s clunky but raw, the latter in a good way.
Teriffic actress with many good performances. But yeah, it’s hard to pick anything but Fargo.
It really is the obvious choice!
I love her! She is great in everything she turns her hand to. I do love seeing these images Nostra!
Thanks a lot Scott!
I haven’t seen too many of her films but I generally like Frances. She’s lovely in this underrated ‘Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day’ and of course she’s great in ‘Fargo.’
Another movie of her I have not seen. I should start watching more of her I guess.
I have only seen her in Fargo and Almost Famous, but she is fantastic in both. Really need to see more of her work.
She will always be Margie Gunderson to me…
Great post. I really love these
