Dell from Dell on Movies was inspired by my recent relay race and decided to start one focussing on just the female iconic characters. To make sure I wouldn’t get angry with him (just kidding) he has first assigned it to me.
The rules?
A list of 10 iconic female movie characters has been made. That list will be assigned to another blogger who can then change it by removing one character (describing why they think she should not be on the list) and replacing it with another one (also with motivation) and hand over the baton to another blogger. Once assigned, that blogger will have to put his/her post up within a week. If this is not the case the blogger who assigned it has to reassign it to another blogger. After you have posted your update leave the link in the comments below and I will make sure it gets added to the overview post.
The list currently holds the following characters:
Ellen Ripley
Holly Golightly
Nurse Ratched
Princess Leia
Mary Poppins
Dorothy Gale
Sarah Connor
Mrs. Robinson
Foxy Brown
Scarlett O’Hara
It is a great list and I have to admit that it is hard making a choice of who to remove from the list. Partly because I have never seen some of these characters (Foxy Brown, Holly Golightly) so I feel I can’t remove those. Some are ones I wouldn’t want to remove because I agree completely that they should be in an iconic female movie characters top 10 (Mary Poppins, Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Dorothy Gale). This only leaves three choices to remove: Scarlett O’Hara, Nurse Ratched and Mrs. Robinson.
It is a difficult choice. I hate the character of Scarlett O’Hara, but that’s what you are supposed to feel about her. In the history of cinema she is an important character.
Nurse Ratched is an example of a character you won’t forget any time soon. Ruling with an iron fist and making sure her patients listen to her.
This leaves Mrs. Robinson. Even though I have seen the movie I have to say that that character hasn’t stuck with me and therefore I wouldn’t call the role iconic. So she will have to go.
Now who to add? There have been so many iconic characters and I had trouble of just adding one. In the end I decided to go with a character most probably won’t think of immediately but I thought she would be good as she stands out: Lisbeth Salander.
Although she is a woman who has had a hard time growing up she is a strong character, able to make a living with her hacking skills and making sure she can live independently.
I would like to assign the baton to Rodney from Fernby Films.
Cool choice. I wasn’t expecting to see such young blood yet, but I love Lisbeth. What a nice start to the relay.
Yeah, I was thinking about a few of the classic ones, but decided to do something more unexpected. Plus the fact that the character has already been played by two actresses says enough about her iconic status.
AS GOD AS MY WITNESS I SHALL NEVER BE HUNGRY AGAIN….
I’ve never seen Gone with the Wind but I often felt that Scarlett was just fucking annoying. FRANKLY MY DEAR, I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!
Yeah, she annoyed the hell out of me as well, but it doesn’t make her any less iconic.
Good choice and good removal.
Thank Victor!
Nice addition. Good to see some “fresh blood” in the list!
Thanks Jaina, thought it would be nice to do something unexpected but someone who would also make a chance of staying in the list for a while (I hope)
I’m bummed that Mrs. Robinson is off the list, but Lisbeth is a great call.
Thanks Eric
(the swedish) Lisbeth is a great addition to the women in the list!
Nostra, please watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s now and get to know ms Holly Golightly ASAP!
Well I did and will post a review this week. Warning though….I didn’t like the movie much….
I haven’t seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, but she seems like a terrific choice. She sounds like quote a survivor … and a total bad ass.
Check out the original trilogy….it’s great.

The addition of Lisbeth is inspired… newer characters are tricky for this topic, because we don’t know yet if they’ll stand the test of time. But I hope she does. Also agree that Mrs. Robinson wasn’t needed here. My entry here: http://martinteller.wordpress.com/2014/08/28/blogathon-the-ten-most-iconic-female-movie-characters/
Yeah, really hope she wil stand the test of time!
A great way to start the series. Nicely argued too. Salander is a great book character too.
Well, I was second in line 😉 I had to pick one which people wouldn’t think of immediately.
