Blade runner, science fiction from the beginning of the eighties. The movie is directed by Ridley Scott, who also is responsible for movie like Alien, Thelma & Louise and Gladiator. Is Blade Runner a classic?
The movie has been made in 1982 and was ahead of its time. Visually the movie is very impressive, the sets really are remarkable. The flying cars with the smoke underneath seem to really fly and it feels like a realistic future. This feeling is also achived because not everything is perfect. The streets are dirty and busy and you can see that people are just living their lives in this city.
I have to admit that I expected more of this movie and thought it had a very simple story. I’ve watched the Final cut and understood that the original version had a voiceover (which is said to be very bad) which explains some things. It also has a different ending. I’ll probably will watch that version as well to see if i like it better after that.
On IMDB i’ve read the discussions about the question whether or not Deckard is a replicant. Ridley Scott says he is, but both Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer don’t agree with him on it. I really don’t know and would need to watch it again, but it’s funny to see that after so many years there are still discussions about it.
Even though i expected more from this movie, i do think it is a classic within the science fiction genre. The effects have not lost anything of their power and the vision of the future is a complete one that remains impressive.
Score: 8
