After remaking Charlie and the chocolate factory, Tim Burton, using his typical look and dark humour (which i thought was not as good as the previous version) has done the same for Alice in wonderland. Does the movie with the white rabbit disappear down the black hole or does Burton manage to create a real wonderland?
Over the last few years Tim Burton has shown that he has developed his own style, which i think is very gothic. Also in Alice in Wonderland he knows how to give it his own twist.
Wonderland is not as colorful as the cartoon (even though the promotion shot above might give you another idea). Instead it’s a dark place with strange characters. Burton already made several movies with Johny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the chocolate factory and Sweeney Todd among many more) and continues this cooperation. Of course Depp is well-known for the excentric characters he plays (his most famous is of course pirate Jack Sparrow).
He plays the role of the mad hatter in a bizarre, but very entertaining way.
The movie doesn’t contain the riddles and a lot of other things you might expect to be present in an Alice in Wonderland movie. According to this film this is the second time she travels to wonderland. This allows Burton some more freedom in expanding the story. I haven’t read the book, but i don’t think there is a fight with a dragon in it (there wasn’t one in the cartoon). So the for small kids it might be too scary.
Helena Bonham Carter plays the red queen fantastically and keeps yelling “off with their head” whenever there’s someone she does not like. A scene in which she puts her feet on the belly of a pig to keep her feet warm i though was very funny.
Anne Hathaway is the white queen and i really liked her performance. The way she does each movement is genius and made me laugh. I haven’t seen the movie in 3D, but did see the trailer in 3D and thought it didn’t look very impressive.
Not having any feeling with the books or the previous Disney cartoon i thought it was a succesful adaptation of the Alice story. Original elements, the dark humour and the visual execution impressed me and that’s why it has the score below.
Score: 8
I was thinking the same thing me and my sis just saw the pics last night and they’re crepey!!! We were wondering the same thing about the White Queen .I never heard of her! Tweedledee and Tweedledum are soooo CREEPY looking lol. It really seems that he will be crazy as usual and change the story around .although I love Tim Burton and am still excited to see what the movie will be like but it does UPSET ME!!!
