After all the jokes about the badly photoshopped film poster, it’s time to check out the actual movie. Can you compare the movie to the poster or do you get the feeling that the movie is just as bad as that?
Takers tells the story of a couple of robbers (played by Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy) who do one big job each year. After a big bank job one of their members (Ghost, played by T.I.) who has just been released from prison has another job for them. The group decide to listen to his proposition.
As things go there of course is a cop, Jack Welles (Matt Dillon), who tries to find the group. It doesn’t take long before it becomes very clear that he does not do everything by the book.
The movie had a couple of nice action scenes, but there was one where I really was annoyed by Ghost commentary of something Paul Walkers character was doing. It felt like he was doing some sports commentary and it really took me out of the action.
Takers is the kind of heist movie I’ve already seen many times. I don’t know that it was because of this, but the movie had no surprises at all. The script was very predictable and you see a lot of twists far in advance. If someone just was released from prison you can probably guess what will happen.
With so many big names starring in this movie, I had hoped that it was put to good use, which unfortunately wasn’t the case. The characters don’t have a lot of background story and the actors seem to have been chosen to make a good-looking group as the characters don’t stand out and are interchangeable for the most part.
Takers is a very “middle of the road” type of movie that doesn’t excel anywhere. Switch off your brain and it will entertain you enough. That’s the reason I’m awarding it with a 6. But if you haven’t seen The Town yet, I suggest you watch that instead.
Score: 6
