2010, another year that has passed, which of course is always a nice opportunity to look back at the past year. It’s the year in which I’ve started writing this blog and have ended up with writing over 200 reviews. With all that writing my passion for watching and enjoying movies has grown even more. I want to thank everyone for reading and responding my opinion about the movies I watch. In the end I appreciate you taking the time to read it all and I especially enjoy talking about the movies, which to me is the most important reason for writing.
While looking back it is inevitable to also write down some lists. It has taken quite a lot of time to go through all the movies I’ve seen this year and decide which ones to include. If I would make the list in a month it would probably be a little different, but you have to make decisions. I’ve seen exactly 300 movies this year (which means that I saw one every 1.2 day), which makes it hard to choose your favorites. The image at the start of the article, which you can click to enlarge it, shows almost all movies I’ve seen this year. You will notice that I have not been able to review them all.
Looking back I’m happy with the amount of readers that have been reading My Filmviews. A lot of them do so through the apps on the Symbian platform, which take the articles on the site and format them nicely so you can read the on your mobile. Since the apps launched in may (for both the Dutch and English version of the site) they have been download more than 47000 times. It is a number which I did not imagine reaching and it is a nice surprise to see their popularity. The 5 countries where it is downloaded the most are India, Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand en Indonesia, so a special thank you to my readers out there. If there are movies from your country that I really should be seeing, please let me know. I’m always open to watch movies I have not heard of before.
There are a couple of films which I’ve given a 10 this year. They only receive a 10 if they give me a “WOW!” feeling, so it has to be a movie which has impressed me or has made an impact on me and which I consider a classic film. These are the must-see movies I saw this year (sorted by year):
The Great Dictator (1940)
Vertigo (1958)
Psycho (1960)
Alien (1979)
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
The Abyss (1989)
Groundhog Day (1993) (have not written a review for it yet)
Dumb & Dumber (1994)
Papurika (2006)
Collapse (2009)
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Black Swan (2010)
Of course there were also some movies which I did not like at all. This years choices are:
P.S. I Love You (2007)
I’m Still Here (2010)
In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007)
Ninja Assassin (2009)
Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball (2010)
Aziz Ansari: Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening (2010) (have not reviewed it, but I don’t think Aziz Ansari is very funny)
And of course the list everyone wants to read. Which are my personal favorites when it comes to the movies that came out this year?
My personal top 10:
Already one of my favorite movies ever, telling the story of a dancer striving for perfection and the effects that has on her.
This is a movie I was blown away by the first and second time I saw it. Amazing story, wonderfully edited and a concept which really struck a chord with me.
Never expected a movie about terrorism to be this funny. One of the best comedies in years.
Prison life is hard and sometimes you have to make though choices to survive. Really liked the whole feel of this movie and the acting was great.
Another comedy which I loved, showing the impact changes can have on someone’s life. Clooney and Kendrick are both very funny.
Didn’t imagine that a movie about Facebook could be so captivating. Great acting and soundtrack kept me on the edge of my seat.
A perfect mix of comic books, videogames, comedy and action. I greatly enjoyed it.
Whether or not you think it is an actual documentary, it is an excellent view into the mind of Banksy and the world of (street) art.
Great way to end this trilogy, with moments that really managed to impress and made me feel for the characters.
Another movie starring George Clooney, this time as an assassin in a beautiful Italian village. Although not a lot happens in this film I really like the way in which it has been filmed. I was enchanted by its beauty.
Of course there are a lot of movies that were released this year which I have not seen. Are there any that I’ve missed but should see? Don’t agree with some of my choices for the top 10? What are your personal top 10 choices for 2010? Let me know in the comments!
One of the few people on the planet to have seen Mr. Nobody! Would’ve been my #1 movie of the year last year (saw it At TIFF) had it been an official release. It’s an amazingly ambitious piece of awesome.
PS – adding your list to our aggragate list of lists.
I really had a hard decision to make whether or not to put Mr.Nobody in first place, but being blown away by Black Swan and not having time to rematch both I had to make a decision. Hardly anyone has seen Mr.Nobody, but everyone should.
Thanks for putting me on the list!
I just saw “Black Swan” for the second time this week. It holds up extremely well and will surely end up making my year-end list.
I’m expecting it will hold up for me as well. Will check out your list to see your choices.

Happy to see Exit Through the Gift Shop on your list!
Nice to hear. It’s a great documentary, which will probably be just as interesting to watch a second or third time. Will have a look at your list now!
Generally, I think that you know at what points we both disagree, but they are actually our personal lists and favotites. I don’t think that such stuff sholud be debated over. Besides, we both loved ‘Black Swan’. I also hope to review ‘Mr. Nobody’ soon, although I might need the second viewing.
Yeah, I know. You probably are missing Inception in the list, but although it’s good it’s not a movie I’d watch again soon.
I agree that you can’t argue about personal choices, but it is interesting sometimes to know why someone likes something so much.
How is Up In The Air in your top 10? did it just come out by you?
This is a very solid list that I mostly agree with. #teampilgrim
Yeah, in the Netherlands it came out in 2010, so that’s why it’s in there, same story for Mr.Nobody, which is also a 2009 film.
What’s your top 10 list?
