According to some Ed Wood was the worst director that ever lived. Others might think of Uwe Boll, but I can’t confirm either choice as I haven’t seen any film made by these directors. After watching the movie Ed Wood I actually would like to watch at least on of his movies as I got this “so bad it’s good” feeling about them. Ed Wood tries to show how this director ended up in the world of movies and what happened once he did.
Johny Depp is Ed Wood, a director and writer of play who don’t get good reviews. He ends up on a movie set and sees opportunities to have his ideas appear on the big screen. Initially no one is enthusiastic about his idea, which changes after a coincidental meeting with Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau), an actor who has passed his prime and is out of the spotlight. He once was very famous because of his interpretation of Dracula. The two start talking and become friends. With this famous actor Ed Wood manages to convince someone to have him make a movie. It quickly becomes clear that he’s not a man of detail as he doesn’t have a problem with small errors that are made during filming. The end result is a disaster.
Both Johny Depp as Martin Landau are excellent in their roles, with Landau completely disappearing, which won him an Oscar for the best male supporting actor. Depp has already shown that he’s good at playing strange characters and Ed Wood is no exception. Wood was known to appear in drag and so does Depp in this film.
The movie has been directed by Tim Burton and it’s one of the many times he has worked together with Depp.
Ed Wood tells a very interesting story about one of Hollywood’s more eccentric directors which resulted in a very interesting film.
