With a title like Blue Valentine you would expect that it’s a perfect romantic movie you’d want to watch with your significant other. Is this really the case or is it better to search for another movie to watch?
To immediately answer my question: Blue Valentine isn’t a fairytale about how amazing love is. Although it does show the magic that can happen when two people are just meeting each other, the early feelings and crazy things that people like about each other, it also shows that these feelings can change through the years. So the film also shows the darker side of a relationship, but manages to do so in an exquisite way.
The main characters are played by Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, who both act realistically, which really pulls you into the movie and has you experiencing their highs and lows. You start to care about their characters, both Dean and Cindy. Whether or not you’d want to, you will start to choose sides for either one of them and I think not everyone will make the same choice as both characters have their strong points and flaws.
Originally the movie was supposed to be shot earlier, but was delayed by Heath Ledger’s death (Michelle Williams was married to him). Despite the delay the end result is stunning. The film has a lot of improvisation and because of the strong feeling of a bond between the characters it manages to effect your emotions. It’s a movie which you should check out.
Score: 9
Planning to review it today, too.

It was a moving story, although it wasn’t in my top 10, it is one that is worth watching. Can’t wait to read your review.

I love it when you can tell that the actors don’t just show up on set and read the lines, but a character has been brewing in them for years. Great film, one of my favourites.
I read that the actors decided to live in one house for a while before shooting the film, which gave them more of a connection and it shows.
