The Nest, as this movie is also known, is a movie which I knew nothing about. I can’t remember where I read it, but someone described it as a French version of Die Hard. Which for me was enough reason to track down this movie to find out if this was the case.
Just like in Die Hard the movie is mostly set in one location after all the characters are introduced. One of these characters is the leader of a criminal gang who was trafficking women, but has been apprehended and needs to be transported. The transport is heavily armed and on its way it is attacked. Barely surviving the truck escapes and ends up in a warehouse, where a group of criminals is trying to steal some merchandise. When the warehouse is surrounded the movie really starts as both the people from the transport and the criminals are trapped, with no way to escape and having to defend themselves from the attacking hordes that are trying to free their boss.
I think that the movie really can’t be compared to Die Hard, the setup just isn’t the same. It’s not a case of one man fighting everyone, but it’s a type of fight that’s more comparable to something like Seven Samurai as the village there kept getting attacked, with everyone trying to survive. But before you get your hopes up, this is where the comparison ends as the movie does not have the quality of Kurosawa’s work.
The action scenes are nice and the fights against faceless criminals almost feel like the waves of baddies you’d see in videogames with the game getting harder the more you progress. Unfortunately the characters don’t have any depth to them, which makes the whole thing feel empty. If you are planning to watch this film you must think of it as a no-nonsense action movie.
