Attack the Block (2011)

You take a street kid gang, a couple of gangsters, a building block in the suburbs of London and some aliens, mix them together and the result of it is Attack the Block. Is it a result worth seeing?

This science fiction movie gives the genre a fresh impulse because of its setting and the age of the protagonists. These teenagers terrorise the neighbourhood, do stickups and can’t wait to start working for the local drug dealer. As they are robbing a young woman they are interrupted by an alien that crashes into a nearby car. They are able to fight it, but as the number of aliens suddenly starts growing they are forced to lock themselves into their apartment building and use any weapon they can find like kitchen knives and fireworks. The result is a movie full of suspense, but also full of humour.

With a budget of 9 million pounds it’s a relatively cheap movie, but the budget has been used effectively. The aliens are so dark that they don’t reflect any light (the only thing you will see are their teeth), which possibly also saved some costs. This is a movie which I really enjoyed. The cast is great and they give their characters real relationships. They care for each other and got each other’s back. As I was watching this I felt part of the group and was really hoping they’d be able to survive.

If you are looking for an original movie with aliens, then Attack the Block is highly recommended.

Score: 9

    • Yeah, it’s good to know when someone has similair taste in movies, makes picking out new movies to see that much easier 🙂 Looking forward to your opinion about it once you’ve seen it.

  1. I’ve wanted to see this for the longest time. I even drove an hour to see it only to be shut out (It was a screening). My anticipation has diminished greatly after being snubbed multiple times, but I do hope I get the opportunity to see it soon.
