Time to kick off the Battle of the Bady Guys with two iconic villains, so I’m not making it easy. Time to cast your vote!
Hans Gruber
This is the villain in the first Die Hard, leader of a group of terrorists who take some people hostage in a skyscraper in order to free others who are in prison. Secretly it’s a plot to reach another goal, but he didn’t count on John McClane.
versus
Bill the Butcher
Responsible for killing Amsterdam Vallon’s father, Bill the Butcher is a master with his knives and a frightening presence.

See I voted for Hans, mainly for ±Rickman and his acting skills. This was wrong huh?
Ah well I stand by my choice
I will refrain from voting myself (I want to be the objective referee ;)), but I would have a hard time picking one as they both are awesome characters.
I vote Gruber. Bill the Butcher is all intimidation. Hans, meanwhile, showed a prowess for quick thinking and clever scheming. Plus, in a fight between the two, Gruber would have access to better weapons.
That currently puts Gruber in the lead! I like your reasoning. I imagine a scene between them which would play out like that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where he uses his gun on a bad guy 😉
Yeah, pretty much! Bill would be doing his knifey eye-tapping thing, and then Gruber would just shoot him and move on.
I feel like I’m being too hard on Bill. I really dig that character, and DDL was great in the role. Still, I stand by my Gruber vote.
Bill is losing at the moment, was expecting this battle to be a lot closer!
Hi, Nostra and company:
Great to see you’re bringing out the big guns right away!
I went with Hans Gruber.
Bill the Butcher had the gestures, tics and soliloquies to run a street mob through fear and reputation.
Hans Gruber had the style, charming charisma, fashion sense and seductive sociopathy so needed and desired in today’s upper management, media savvy villain.
Very interesting reasoning Jack!
This is so awesome! (a little jealous I didn’t think of it first!! haha) I have voted! Hans Gruber all the way!
Jealous? No reason for that! Thanks for voting…
I guess I might be one of the few who voted for Bill the Butcher. I just love Day Lewis performance in that role. Either of these could win and I’d be happy though.
Maybe he’ll make a comeback, will have to decide when I close the voting. Probably will leave it open for a few days…
Gotta go with Bill the Butcher. Hans Gruber is one cunning SOB but I wouldn’t want to get gutted by DDL while he screams “I drink your milkshake!”
Hahaha, that’s some very good reasoning to choose Bill!
I haven’t seen There Will Be Blood though from the reviews Bill sounds like a real evil man. I’d go with Gruber for that reason and because I LOVE Alan Rickman 🙂
Bill the Butcher is a character in Gangs of New York, but just like in There Will Be Blood it’s another amazing performance by Daniel Day Lewis.
Oh right, I haven’t seen either, hence the confusion. Still go w/ Gruber though 🙂
Man, what a tough choice! Both are incredible, but I picked Bill the Butcher. Definitely a dude I would NOT want to mess around with.
Knives are bit scarier as guns, aren’t they? 🙂
Just casted by vote – it went to Bill the Butcher. I agree with Eric, I would definitely not want to get on the wrong side of Bill. The man has definitely got a screw or two loose, and it was another great performance by Daniel Day Lewis.
I thought the race would be done, but with your votes for Bill the current standing are 50/50!
Tough one, but the Butcher gets my vote even though I hated the film, but he was the only good (well bad) thing in the film.
He is so memorable in that role, one of his best performances!
