I might be repeating myself, but as you know I love Korean movies. What I love most is how unpredictable they are. This movie seemed like a war movie, but it turned out to be much more than that.
It’s 1950 and the American have landed at Incheon. The Northern troops (or what is left of them) are fleeing from the South Korean army. During this journey they meet a strange girl who takes them to her village. It turns out this isn’t any normal village as time seems to have stood still there. They are unaware of modern technology, have no idea about weapons (they see guns as sticks) or the outside world and all seem so innocent. Once the South Koreans also find the village it means a new threat to their old way of life. The question is whether or not they will be able to cope with it or if the village will fall victim to a war they weren’t part of.
Now this is a movie with lots of humour, even though there are soldiers this feels more like an anti-war movie. It looks good and it’s story will make you laugh and cry as well (although I must admit I didn’t ;)). One of my favorite scenes is one where it rains popcorn (it’s also in the trailer if you want to see it). For those with a new year resolution to watch more foreign movies I would suggest starting with Korean cinema. It has so many amazing ones that are worth checking out.
