The Many Faces of… Nicole Kidman

Welcome to another installment of this weekly series, this week starring Australian actress Nicole Kidman. She was born on the 20th of June 1967 on Hawaii (also making her American). Her parents went back to Australia when she was four. There she went to several schools where she showed a talent for acting even though she was quite shy. She studied at various theatre schools. She had her first role at the age of 16 acting in a Christmas movie, Bush Christmas. It was followed by work in a TV series and various roles in other movies. She made her American debut opposite of Tom Cruise (who was her boyfriend at the time) in Days of Thunder and her star quickly began to rise. She won an Oscar for her role in The Hours.

She has done quite a lot of movies, but my favorite would be her role in Rabbit Hole where she really shows what a great actress she is portraying a mother who has lost her child. It really impressed me.

What’s your favorite Nicole Kidman role?

  1. Haven’t seen Rabbit Hole yet but I think she is brilliant in The Others. One of my favourite films and a really strong performance from Kidman.

  2. I haven’t seen Rabbit Hole either, but I have to agree with Pete in that I very much enjoyed her in The Others. I also loved Moulin Rouge, but I think my personal favorite would have to be Cold Mountain. A fantastic performance. Great choice for Friday, Nostra!

    • I haven’t seen The Others, so I guess I should check it out. I love Moulin Rouge as well, some of the few musicals I actually enjoy a lot and rewatched several times.

  3. Nice to see a female actress in the series! I like her in Moulin Rouge and To Die For, but haven’t seen her newer stuff. Might rent Rabbit Hole one of these days.

  4. I can’t say that Nicole Kidman has ever been one of those actresses that’s really impressed me over the years. Don’t get me wrong I think she did a remarkable job in The Hours, Moulin Rouge, and To Die For (haven’t seen Rabbit Hole, not sure I want to) and she should be given credit for those roles but she just never springs to mind when I think great actresses, like Cate Blanchett.

Nice addition to ‘The Many Faces Of…” though.

    • I think she is a great actress, but of course not everyone might feel the same way. Cate Blanchett has been noted down and planned in for one of the upcoming Many Faces of posts 🙂

  5. I haven’t seen Rabbit Hole but intend to do so soon. I thought she was really good in The Hours, it was nice seeing her play a different role but my favourite Nicole Kidman is probably Moulin Rouge.. and not just for Ewan McGregor’s appearance!

  6. She’s wonderful, but it’s a shame she made so many bad choices in last years – Invasion, Bewitched, Stepford Wives….my favorite performance of hers is definetly “To die For” but I love a lot of her films – The Hours, The Others and Practical Magic, in which she is just lovely.

Reading the rest of the reactions, it seems not everyone is a big fan of her, but I really enjoy her work.
