With the start of a fresh week it’s time for a new Monday question. Hope you all had fun during the weekend and managed to catch some great movies. I went to see The Avengers yesterday (I’ll let you know my thoughts in the review) and read this week that in America the movie would have an extra scene after the credits. It made me wonder about the credits themselves:
Do you sit through the end credits?
I have to admit I usually don’t watch them unless I know there are some scenes after the credits. Another reasons I might watch them if they are nicely animated or have outtakes. But to be honest, I will not really read credits.
Do you sit through the end credits?
Yes. I do so in part out of respect for the crew involved in making the film, and in part to catch some interesting names & companies.
Interesting to see the mixed responses, although generally it seems most people don’t read them.
Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. There are times when I do and there are times when I don’t. If there is something expected I obviously will. Also in Indian films they sometimes have a small window with a popular song from the film playing along with the credits, so then I’ll sit, but I’m busy watching the song/dance rather than paying attention to the credits. Although if I really like something or someone in the movie I’ll sit and see who it was that did that.
I guess I always think that if I need to find out something, I’ll be able to do so on IMDB π
If I’m by myself, yes. If I’m not, maybe. If I hated the movie, no.
I’m sad that I apparently missed something at the (true) end of the credits in The Avengers though. I didn’t know it was there.
The very-post-credits scene is already up on YouTube if you missed it. Or you could just go and see it again (but only in America)
Thanks. I’d rather not sit through the whole thing again just to see something after the credits, so I guess I’ll catch it on Youtube.
Yeah, it was only in America, so thanks for the link. That new one wasn’t really that special, although a nice little wink to something they said earlier.
I occasionally do but generally not. Yay for all the people who worked on a film, but I don’t really need to know your name. I can watch the credits and watch the names roll by, but I’m not bound to remember beyond director, actors, writers, producers and maybe cinematographers and composers…in other words the people who are already recognized in opening credits. It can be interesting to see all the various positions that a film entails, but that’s a novelty that died out thousands of films ago in my film-watching life. So now unless they are actively entertaining me during credits or I’m specifically looking for a piece of information, I’ll leave. I don’t stay for things at the end of otherwise normal credits because I think it is a despicable practice.
I always find it interesting to see how much credits have changed over time. Old movies just say The End and that was it.
Nah I’m afraid I don’t either. I like to think it’s not going to make any difference to the lives or careers of anyone involved in the film if I do or not. Unfortunately in the grand scheme of things, I am fully aware of my total insignificance… sob.
Hahaha, no you are not!
Every time. I’m always the last to leave the theatre at the end of the movie. If I’ve gone with a group they’ll be waiting for me outside. This is why I never take a first date to the movies!
Nice, so do your friends think it is weird or have they accepted it π
They think it’s a little weird but they know not to bother me!
It’s a nope from me. Well, unless I know there’s a goodie for me after the credits. Or if I’m feeling lazy and just don’t fancy moving. I rarely sit through the credits.
Up and out then! π
If I’m in the cinema, I’ll only sit through the credits if I know there is an added scene. If I’m watching a film on TV or Blu-Ray/DVD, I always fast-forward through the credits just in case. Seem to have missed loads of post-credit scenes in the past, whether they were relevent to the main film or not.
I think I might have missed a couple as well because I simply didn’t know…
I never sit through end credits in the cinema, though I sometimes watch them at home when I play the movie on dvd and nice music is playing during them or if there is supposed to be a scene after them.
You are part of the majority it seems…
Depends. Sometimes they put something entertaining there which makes me stay for them (I should probably write something about that and how it ‘complicates’ cinematic storytelling or whatever).
I also stay for the credits if it’s a press and industry screening. The former know a lot about who does specific department work and with the latter it’s because a friend is a friend of the key grip or something.
Yeah, you should write something about it.
I probably would as well out of respect for the people involved.
If it’s a bad movie, I’m outta there faster than you can imagine, but other than that, I usually stay. Not just for any after credits scene, but also to look for names that I may recognize in the cast or crew! A lot of people doing some great work.
Interesting!
Hi, Nostra and company:
Good question!
I’ll sit through all phases of a film. Including the final credits. Especially if the film intrigues me or is sub standard. So I have someone to admire, blame or write off my Watch List.
It is through this method that I learned that Gene Hackman played the blind man in ‘Young Franksenstein’ and have followed Vilmos Zsigmond’s career behind the camera from the el cheapo, B- Movie, ‘The Sadist’ in 1963. To his work on ‘Scarecrow’, Deliverance’ and ‘The Deer Hunter’.
Haha, the name and blame game. I’m always amazed by the amount of detail you know about a movie, so it’s not surprising you check the credits.
I usually try to sit through the credits, though not if I have to run and catch the train home. As well as for interests sake, the music played over the credits is often an important part of the film as well, still adding to the atmosphere. Just think about the beautiful music at the end of Alien, or The Assassination Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; or even Wake Up by Rage against the Machine at the end of The Matrix (a great and in this case very pertinent song). To me the credits are as much a part of the film as the intro, and you wouldn’t dream of missing that. Like I say though, if I have to run to catch a train, I have to skip them; I missed the extra scene at the end of The Grey because of this π
There was an extra scene after the credits with The Grey? I didn’t know that and probably missed it then….
Apparently you get to see Neeson lying atop the Alpha wolf for a few seconds. Nothing amazing. Hardly Nick Fury or Agent Coulson material!
Nope, didn’t see that bit…doesn’t feel I missed much π
To be fair, mostly I do not. And I hate people who just sit there and block you in when you have to get out and home quickly to let the babysitter go home….
Is that another cinema etiquette post coming up?
I usually do, but other than outtakes and extra scenes afterward, the thing I really enjoy looking for are the movies filming locations.
I have a few friends in the industry that I sometimes look for, but I usually know ahead of time what they worked on.
If you know people in the industry then I can imagine you wanting to check it out.
Depends how good the movie is. Sometimes when a film is done, like, say, Shame, I find myself unable to move, so I study the names tickering by on the screen. Most of what I see in the theaters is garbage, so I don’t bother sticking around for the credits. Most, not all.
I can imagine that, sometimes a movie can be very taxing and you’ll just have to sit for a moment.
Yes I do usually wait until the crowd leaves before we walk out. And in the case of superhero movies lately, I make sure I wait as there’s ALWAYS a post-credit scene! π
True! The first time I remember knowing there was a post credits scene was the second matrix movie. Now I usually check in advance if it’s a specific type of movie to know if I can leave when the credits roll.
Sometimes. If I am still in awe after a movie, I will sit there longer to digest my thoughts. If the movie was not so good, I’ll leave pretty quick.
So no standard routine for you.
Unless I know there’s something appearing after the credits I won’t watch them. Credits are wonderful for those involved in the film but they literally mean nothing to me. At this point my legs and back are usually hurting so much I’m ready to get out of Dodge.
