Last week I had a day to myself and decided to spend most of the day at the cinema. I saw three 3D movies (which I don’t suggest trying as you eyes will kind of hurt afterwards) and one of them was Monster University. In front of it there was a trailer for the Walking with Dinosaurs movie which will come out at the end of the year and I noticed something: The trailer had a voiceover. It made me realise that not many trailer use them anymore. Although I think it is not necessary to have them as a taste of a movie can be given quite effectively without them I felt a bit of nostalgia.
Just listen to this:
So this week’s question:
Do you think that more trailers should have voiceovers or don’t you miss them?
Ahah, as soon as I saw your question, it made me think of this comedy I saw earlier this year called In A World (http://flixchatter.net/2013/05/16/indie-review-lake-bells-debut-film-in-a-world/). Yeah, I think it’s cheesy to use VO in trailers, so I’m glad we don’t hear ’em as often.
I’ve had that movie on my to watch list for a while, but it’s not out here yet. It can be cheesy but for me a big part is nostalgia.
Honestly, I don’t really like voice-overs in trailers. I find it distracting and takes me away from the image and usually, it’s always on a very bad movie.
Yeah, having seen so many without them now they stand out.
Hmm…now that you mention it, I haven’t heard a VO in trailers for ages I think…I haven’t exactly missed their absence. There’s something very..old school about them now? I don’t think they’re really necessary.
And most of what is revealed through VO is done with inter-titles now anyway…
Yeah it is an old school thing and it’s a bit like voiceovers in movies…usually they are a bad thing because you should be able to tell your story without telling right?
Great question! Yeah, I kinda miss the gravel-voiced “In a world of….” trailer guys. However, it doesn’t seem to be in vogue much anymore. Maybe because it implies a cheesiness that films are trying to get away from, I don’t know.
Thanks..it could be. Some years ago this one was made for My Filmviews (which I still think is awesome):

Am I weird in that I never realise if there is a voiceover? I rarely go to the cinema or watch trailers so maybe thats why, but I guess it doesnt bother me π
In a time when society structures have fallen. In a time when people live in ignorance an fear. One man will raise his voice and provide the voice over. The voice over that will explain everything you are seeing on screen.
Until your question I hadn’t noticed. I’m ambivalent about them.
Hahaha, that made me laugh. I never noticed they weren’t used anymore until I heard a trailer that had it π
Nice question. I don’t mind that most trailers don’t seem to have voiceovers these days (though I kind of miss the guy who seems to do most of them). I feel a trailer needs to introduce a film’s scenario and I think voiceovers are used to tell audiences that instead of showing it directly through video clips.
I don’t mind it either. You can do it efficiently through videos, but nostalgia is a nice thing though π
