Although you might not have noticed, I have been on holiday for the past three weeks (had scheduled quite some posts to keep you entertained though), so this week I will slowly start posting again and visiting your blogs (I’m afraid to see how many posts are waiting in my inbox). So as always let’s start the week again with a Monday question.
As much as I’d like to visit the cinema, time simply does not allow me to see every movie I want there. Looking at the type of movies I saw at the cinema this year I realised something: I actually only seem to watch the big effect heavy movies on the big screen. Which of course is not that surprising as those are the ones you will get the most out of seeing them on a big screen. I don’t mind seeing “smaller” movies at home as I don’t feel I am missing out on much.
This week’s question:
What type of movies do you go and see at the cinema?
That depends on what is playing at the cinema. I often see it based on the filmmaker or buzz on a film that is getting excellent reviews.
Filmmaker is an important one for me as well for specific directors. Buzz can help, but not always for me.
I go watch films from directors that are known to me, and films that sound interesting. But like you, tight schedule at work has restricted me to watch some (e.g. Before Midnight). I tend to watch fun IMAX films (e.g. Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3) and in some local house cinemas, I watch arthouse and avant-garde. There’s a small community of movielovers here in the Philippines which screens a lot of artsy stuff for free. 🙂
Nice that you are able to see the artsy stuff for free!
We go to the movies for “big” movies that we think will benefit from big screen, big speaker system. Last one was Red 2.
Yeah, I usually do as well (with a few exceptions like Before Midnight)
Due to rising costs, I only visit the cinema a few times each year now. I mainly go check out the big summer films – Man of Steel etc etc – leaving the dramas and comedies for the BluRay releases.
Shame you don’t have any cheaper options available!
I try my hardest to see limited releases when my city gets them. I love my indies.
I’m with you here. My wife and I love driving into Dallas for an indie, but sadly that was much easier when we only had ONE child…finding a sitter for three is almost impossible!
Yeah, finding a sitter can make visiting movies together more difficult. That’s why I often go alone (I am a bigger movie fan than my wife is)
I watch almost everything at the theatre. I find I can make the time to watch a movie there but can’t make the time to watch it at the house.
Currently we are a couple with no kids, but I know this situation will change after we adopt.
Nice to have that freedom. Had I been single I would go a lot more 🙂
Sadly, animated films. LOL, having three kids and rarely a babysitter, I tend to see most animated films in the theater and wait until the movies I want to see come out on Netflix. That said, I usually make a list of ten movies I personally want to see in the theater and do my best to see them. Last year I saw like three (Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Skyfall) but this year I’ve already made it to quite a few so maybe I’ll do better.
I do tend to agree with you though, on effects heavy films being the biggest theater draws. I just saw Pacific Rim, and I must say that the stupidity of the film is dulled when you see in on the big screen, mostly because those effects were SO impressive. If I had waited to see that on DVD I probably would have loathed it.
In fact, if I had waited I probably would have skipped it all together, since those types of movies tend to be the ones I DON’T rent.
In that case I understand you have to see animated movies.
Pacific Rim was great to see on the big screen…I did so too!
Usually anything. But recently I’m reconsidering what’s really worth going to the cinema to see because the cinema ain’t cheap these days!
Shame they are not cheap over where you are. I love the unlimited card I have…only the time is an issue.
For me, big effects movies ought be seen at the cinema, not the same to see Independence Day on the tv.
I would also go and see a classic, if epics like for example Lawrence of Arabia are available at local cinema.
Rest of 2013, Gravity, Ender’s Game, & The Hobbit part 2, are the blockbusters I want to see on the big screen.
If I’m anticipating a smaller film by a director I like, then I would go for that too.
Yeah, they are not the same on a smaller screen…unless you sit close and have the surround all the way up 😉
