I’ve been blogging about movies for a couple of years now and with the amount of movies I watch of course I’ve picked up on techniques (when it comes to storylines/camera movements etc). Experience comes with practise as they say, but it is always good to pick up extra knowledge through other ways. I have been reading some books about the history of movies, local cinemas and specific directors. Online there are also a lot of resources available in order to learn. One I have been visiting regularly lately is Filmmaker IQ, which has these awesome articles (also in video form) dealing with various subjects. Whether it is the evolution of color or the history of popcorn, it offers a treasure of information and I suggest checking it out as I’m sure you will enjoy it. My question to you is:
Which site(s) do you use to learn more about the history of movies and techniques about making them?
I often go to Wikipedia to learn about filmmakers while I have a few books that also help learn about films and some screenplay books on a few films that has helped to learn to how to write a script.
Only really use Wikipedia for my Many Faces posts, guess I have to use it for some other stuff too. Great idea!
I typically read out of film encyclopedias and other movie books to learn about history. The website I use most frequently though to learn about cinema would be wikipedia.
I don’t know about film encyclopedias, what do I have to imagine with that? Another vote for Wikipedia 🙂
I think most people would quote imdb as their chief source of information. The other websites I use a lot is boxofficemojo and metacritic.
I also get a lot of information from magazines (Empire and Sight & Sound) and podcasts. Empire do a great podcast where they go in-depth into films, with “Spoiler” interviews with the film-makers where they can talk about the entirety of the film.
Yeah, I use IMDB almost daily. Never used boxofficemojo or metacritic. I don’t read movie magazines, basically because it is about movies I have not seen yet and I want to know as little as I can in advance.
