Often the simple ideas are the most effective and A Simple Plan is a prime example of that. Three men accidentally discover a bag with a huge amount of money which they decide to keep and hide for a while. Life is unpredictable though and these men soon find out that simple things can quickly become extremely complicated.
This is a movie I wish I had seen sooner. It stongly reminded me of Fargo. Not only because of its setting, but also because its extremely strong performances. Billy Bob Thornton stands out though and gives his character an undeniable vulnerability. His characters might not be the smartest person around, but he is driven by his feelings and you notice he thinks a lot about what is important to him.
The story about how money can change people is something other movies have looked at as well (Shallow Grave or Indecent Proposal come to mind) and this movie approaches it from a unique angle. It does not only challenges a friendship, but family relations as well. If you have not seen this movie yet I highly recommend checking it out.
I saw this a while ago but my memory of the details are hazy. I think I like it though. Can’t remember if this is by the Coens or not but yeah, reminds me of Fargo as well.
No, this is not by the Coens, but one which is very good. I think you should give it a rewatch then 😉
Great review Nostra! I haven’t seen this one in a long time but I remember when it came out and being blown away by it. It wasn’t something I’d expect from director Sam Raimi (I almost expected zombies to start attacking at any minute). But this was far more subtle and character-based. The performances are strong and it’s nice to see one of my favorite actors – Bill Paxton – getting a good lead role. One of the best from the 1990s in my opinion.
Thank you Dan. I had never heard of it before, but like you it really managed to surprise me. Paxton gives a great performance, agree on that one.
I remember going to the cinema to see this, and being disappointed that it wasn’t the film I was expecting. Upon viewing it later, I came to regard it as something of a minor classic, much like you have. Nice work! Bill Paxton is such an underrated dramatic actor.
A minor classic sounds about right to me. Paxton doesn’t do big roles, but he is very subtle.
This is one of my favorite books and I thought the movie did a good job making it come to life. I’m glad to see you recommending it 🙂
Did not know it was based on a book. Nice to hear that this movie did a good job bringing it to the screen.
