Passion. A feeling which is overwhelming, can push you to do something and can make you reach heights you never thought possible. Not everyone is willing to follow their passion to reach those heights, either because you can’t make a living of of it or because you would have to give up things which are worth more than the pleasure you’d get from following that passion. Dirk Brossé is someone who at an early age already knew what his passion was: Music. As a little boy he was enchanted by the sounds that surrounded him and he was deeply moved when he heard a trumpet for the first time. He decided to follow his passion and ended up being both composer and music director. The price he had to pay for it was extremely high. In this documentary the viewer sees his life behind the success.
Brossé travels around the world for his job, which sometimes takes him to the US to direct an orchestra playing Star Wars music in a huge arena. Other times he will head to China to lead a group of musicians there. It is a very busy life in which he happily has lost himself, his only things to hold on to are the music itself, his rituals in the dressing room and an occasional visit of his wife. He is very aware that his dedication has made him very lonely and has also destroyed a lot in regards to his personal life. Despite those facts he does not seem to regret his choices in life because he is actually doing what he dreamt of.
His job is not always easy. When he is composing movie music for the movie Singularity from director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields, The Mission) he seriously contemplates about stopping. Every time he has to rewrite his music and there is a moment where Joffé has simply cut up the music and pasted into the soundtrack where he wanted. It is something which Brossé can not appreciate and which drives him crazy because the music does not make sense when used like that. Through interviews with Brossé, his wife, seeing him do his work and meeting various people around the world you get a good picture of the world he is living in. This documentary shows in a fascinating way in which he enjoy his successes and deals with frustrations. Brossé manages to let you dream away, thinking about the possibilities and the heights you would be able to reach if you would follow your own passion without anything slowing you down.
