Idris Elba was born on the 6th of September 1972 in London. He made his first steps into acting when he was at school. In 1986 he helped his uncle to DJ at weddings and with that experience he started a DJ company together with friends. In 1988 he left school and went to the National Youth Music Theatre. He appeared in Crimewatch where he played roles in reconstructions of crime scenes. His first proper role was in Bramwell (1995). After this he appeared in various British shows like Absolutely Fabulous, The Bill, The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Family Affairs, Ultraviolet and Dangerfield. What shot him to stardom was his starring role in The Wire, in which he played the character “Stringer” Bell. He has since starred in various movies, including 28 Weeks Later, RocknRolla, Legacy, The Losers, Takers, Thor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Prometheus, Pacific Rim and Long Walk to Freedom.

I like Elba. He’s usually pretty solid. My favorite role of his is probably as Mumbles in “RocknRolla.”
Yeah, ever since I saw him in The Wire I thought he was cool. Which is probably still my favorite role of his. It’s been a while since I saw him in RocknRolla, so can’t remember his part!
Elba is sooooooo hunky!! I’ve loved him since his role in Rocknrolla, what an awesome duo w/ Gerry Butler, I’d love to see those two team up again. I think that’s one of my fave roles though he’s awesome in Pacific Rim, too!
🙂 Nice to see your enthusiasm for him Ruth. I enjoyed his role in Pacific Rim as well….guess I need to refresh my memory about Rocknrolla.
Ha ha, he was great in RocknRolla, and he made the most of his small role in Prometheus, but I still always think of him most fondly in Pacific Rim. Frankly, he was awful in the equally terrible Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. Man, that film was a dog turd.
I pushed away all memories I have of Ghost Rider, so I can’t remember any performances in it…which I don’t think I mind much 😉
Idris Elba has huge potential. Thought he walked away with his role as Stringer Bell in HBO’s ‘The Wire’. His scenes early on in Business and Econ. classed at UMBC were a hoot. As were his business meeting with street slingers following Robert’s Rules of Order.
Also like his role as ‘Luther’ and as Mumbles in RocknRolla’ very much.
Would not be surprised if Mr. Elba will soon be groomed to be this generation’s Morgan Freeman. He definitely has the chops and talent for it!
Like your comparison with Morgan Freeman….he’s not there yet, but I agree he could become an actor like that.
I think Elba is a solid actor who deserves some bigger roles.
Yeah, he has a lot of potential.
He’ll always be Stringer Bell to me 🙂
That’s the first thing I always think of as well 🙂
Gotta agree with Chris ^
When I think of Elba, Stringer Bell is always the first character that comes to mind.
For obvious reasons, that role was a standout on the show.
