“In A World…” used to be the “trademark” line of Don LaFontaine, who would be responsible for doing the voiceover for a huge number of movie trailers. His voice often was called “the voice of God”. He passed away in 2008 and as the years progressed movie trailers mostly stopped using voiceovers (it seems mostly kids movies are the exception). Still the voice actor is a job that is far from dead (just check out the documentary “I Know That Voice”). It is a world you will not think a lot about and will probably only see in a making of some animated feature film. In a World is based on the job of voice acting and uses it to tell a story. Is it a compelling one?
Lake Bell has written, directed and plays the lead role as Carol. She does some voice coaching, but does not really have work doing voice work. She rolled into the business because of her father Sam (Fred Melamed), who is considered the best voice actor of the moment. As he is getting older he is preparing Gustav (Ken Marino) for the job. The two spend a lot of time together and hear about a big project which could cement their careers even further. Through chance Carol also rolls into competing for the job, which turns out to be vicious where every man (and woman) is fighting their own battle, willing to do anything to get the job.
Even though this is the first feature movie Lake Bell has made she shows that she is someone worth keeping an eye out for. She has delivered a movie with a very interesting premise, lots of funny situations and even some unexpected cameos from famous actors. My expectations were not very high, but this movie really surprised me as it is original and entertaining. Give it a chance if you have not yet.
I found this movie to be endearing for the most part. It gets side tracked with a few subplots, but there’s a lot to like. I wasn’t very familiar with Lake Bell before this movie, and she’s charming and makes for a great lead. I’m glad you caught up with this underseen movie.
Yeah, there could have been less, but I did not mind. Did not know anything about her before seeing it, but I was happily surprised by her work.
I guess I was expecting something different here, because this film…. well, it bored me. I just didn’t find it entertaining much at all. The “behind the scenes” of voice acting is fun for a while, but the subplots didn’t engage me and I just thought the whole thing a little bit of a mess. My own review of this one comes up in a week or so.
Yeah? I am surprised you did not enjoy it. Can not agree on everything though! Looking forward reading your thoughts.
I’d like to see Lake Bell’s comedy again in the future. She’s so refreshing, easy going and likeable. Glad you loved it too!
Happy to hear you also appreciated this one Andina 🙂
Glad you love this too Nostra. I saw it at a local film fest and was very impressed w/ Lake Bell, both as a director and comedienne. Would love to see her tackle directing and doing more comedies!
She has a bright future I think if she keeps making movies like this.
