The Monday Question: Good year?

The Monday Question

Hope you all had a good weekend. As it is almost July we already have half of the year behind us. So this week’s question:

Do you think up till now that 2014 has been a good movie year?

  1. I think it’s been an OK year so far. Nothing really big that has happened as I haven’t seen a lot of 2014 films this year based on this list so far. All the other theatrical releases that I’ve seen so far have been 2013 films from this list.

  2. Hi Nostra! Hope you had a lovely weekend. Interesting question. Well I think it’s been an ok year, there are movies I’ve really enjoyed. I don’t really think about a particular year is a good movie year or not though.

  3. I think so far this year’s been okay, only two movies I truly thought were great, Capt. America 2 and X-Men: Day of Future Past. I’m pretty sure Hollywood is not happy with how things are going so far though, non of their summer flicks have reached $250mil yet and only one reached $200mil. The highest domestic earning movie this year is Capt. 2 and that one came out way back in April. Sure The Amazing Spiderman 2 earns over $700mil but it might not even get to $200mil here in the States.

So I think this year so is kind of meh.

  4. It’s been pretty decent, but I’ve only seen about 20 2014 films. It’s going to be REALLY hard to top 2013 though. That year was astonishingly good.

  5. Good question Nostra! It hasn’t been a very big year getting to the movie theaters a lot, but the movies I’ve seen have been mostly satisfying. The actual releases and hype for new movies seems to be dwindling exponentially though.

  6. So far, it’s been a great year. On top of the 2013 Oscar films that came out in the UK in 2014 (Gravity, Her, Wolf of Wall Street), we’ve had brilliant animation (The Lego Movie), one of the best Marvel Films (Capt. America), my favourite Spider-Man film, some great comedies (22 Jump Street) and some nicely underplayed action films (Edge of Tomorrow).

Sure, we have Transformers lumbering in to spoil everyone’s fun, but it can’t all be great.

  7. Depends if we’re talking US releases(weak year) or Euro releases(strong year due to Wolf of Wallstreet, Her, etc).
Also depends if you go for mainstream: (X-Men, Edge of Tomorrow, The Fault in Our Stars)
Arthouse/indie:(Nymphomaniac, The Past, Only Lovers Left Alive, Enemy, Under The Skin, Locke, The Double)
Or animation:(Lego Movie, The Wind Rises)

The Grand Budapest Hotel was released in most areas, love that film!

  8. I’m still playing catch up on the last couple of years worth of films, let alone keeping track of what’s been going on this year. Damn, I suck this year!

  9. I haven’t seen new releases much but it’s pretty okay. I was disappointed with Amazing Spider-Man 2, just okay with X-Men Days of Future Past but pretty impressed with Edge of Tomorrow and The Grand Budapest Hotel. I guess we’ll see 🙂
