As movie lovers I think we all have some nice DVD/Blu Ray collections stored somewhere in our houses. I do too, even though I rarely look at it with a lot of movies being available with he click of a button through services like Netflix or iTunes. As my collection is stored in a bookcase which is inside a closet I am not too bothered about how it all looks and when I have received screener I usually chuck them in there without any form of system. I used to group movies together based on specific actors or put all the kids movies together, but since I don’t spend any time on it anymore I guess that bookshelf is now a mess.
I would like to know how you have stored your collection, but most importantly:
Do you have a way to organize your DVD/Blu Ray collection? (alphabetical/genre/etc.)
That’s easy. I organize most of my DVDs alphabetically by the director’s last name and the year of release of that film by that director. Here’s an example of that list.
Interesting way to do it, so you are very director focussed which I quite like ๐
I organise them alphabetically by movie name!
I absolutely organize my collection. I do it by genre and then alphabetize them within each genre. I can be pretty OCD about it so I’m constantly going behind my kids and fixing when they put something back out of place. However, I also need to buy another rack (the three in my living room can’t hold one more disc) and I have another 100-150 in boxes in a closet. Just haven’t gotten around to buying it. Great topic.
Don’t you have issues with some movies not belonging to a specific genre? The only thing I make sure is that the kids put back the DVD’s they have taken out. If I don’t one of the shelves will be almost empty after a while.
I’m not much of an organizer but I do organize all of the sequels together, for example I keep all of the Bond discs in order, from Dr. No to Skyfall. I got rid of most of my DVDs but I used to do the same when I have those.
I’m still not as heavy user of online movie viewing like a lot of people, it still can’t deliver picture and sound quality that Bluray can offer. Also, I have a nice home theater set up so I want to make sure I get the best quality when I watch movies at home.
Must be an awesome site all those Bond movies lined up. So you got rid of DVDs, is that because you got into Blu Ray?
I love the online experience, it is so much easier. I think the streaming quality is very good. Haven’t got a Blu Ray player so I can’t compare.
Yeah, I got rid of my DVDs because I started collecting Bluray discs. Sucks that I have to re-buy a lot of the movies but Bluray delivers the picture and sound quality that are as good or better than at a movie theater. I especially love how some older films looks so stunning on Bluray, for example Lawrence of Arabia and Raiders of the Lost Ark were quite stunning to see and hear in HD.
When streaming can deliver that same quality, then I’ll stream more movies. As of now, Bluray is the best quality for delivering the best quality for movies and TV shows.
By genre and then by year.
So all the Sci-Fi, Westerns, War, Drama, Superhero, etc. are grouped together, and then within the genre they are organized oldest release date to most current.
Probably not ideal, but it works for me.
I tend to rewatch movies I am in the mood for: I’m in the mood for a superhero movie, in the mood for a comedy, gangster film, etc..
PS – I will keep sequels grouped together.
That’s an interesting way to approach it, but with that I’m always wondering if a movie is a mix of genres where you wil put it. For example Cowboys and Aliens, would you put that in Western or Sci-Fi?
Bad example since I would not own “Cowboys & Aliens”. That being said I would put it in Sci-Fi.
I was expecting that answer ๐
The only thing I organized is that I separated the DVDs from my Blu-ray collection and just this weekend I actually put all the superhero movies together in one row, just for the fun of it ๐
So those are the only ones you really want to be able to find quickly then Ruth? ๐
When I first started collecting DVDs, I was strictly alphabetical. My tastes led to some fun side-by-side movies, like Citizen Kane and Commando. Nowadays, after a couple years of no order at all, I just put things into genre order, mainly because I wanted all my martial arts DVD together and easily accessible. Same for my Criterions. It works.
Looking at the other comments it seems that organising them by genre is a very popular way to go ๐
I organized my criterions based on their spine number, but aside from that i grouped everything else based on their packaging.. (i don’t have that many really) but i grouped the steelbooks with other steelbooks, box sets and boxsets, while those little amarays actually sorted by the color of their spine XD
๐ I like that idea of sorting them by the color of their spine
