According to IMDB 2013 has produced a total of 179 animated movies. Included in that number are titles like Frozen, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Croods. These are all movie I’ve seen, but with such a huge number it happens that I’ll miss some. Escape from Planet Earth was one of them and was available on Netflix (and other formats). So an easy way to check it out and see if I missed out on something.
Scorch Supernova is a hero on planet Baab. He is a tough, confident alien (who is enjoying lots of sponsorships) and is executing nothing but successful space missions. His brother Gary however is the brains behind the success and helps him where he can from his position at mission control. When an SOS is received from planet earth Scorch immediately decide to head there, but this time without his brothers help (because of a fight) and is captured. It is up to Gary to save him.
The movie strongly reminded me of a reverse version of the animated film Planet 51. Here Gary and Scorch have to escape earth fighting their way past various obstacles. The animation looks good, but isn’t breath taking like a Pixar or Disney manage to produce. That doesn’t matter though, because Escape from Planet Earth is, especially for kids a very enjoyable film. There are various references to other movies (for example the Star Wars “trench run”) and the jokes regularly hit their target. This makes Escape from Planet Earth a nice little animated movie if you are looking for something light.
