Throught he years the time travel genre has given us quite a lot exciting movies. Most will probably think of Back to the Future series first, but movies like Timecrimes, Primer, Looper, The Time Machine and Donnie Darko are just a few examples which are also worth checking out. It is one of my favorite genres and when director Walker Haynes asked me if I wanted to check out his time travel movie Hamlet’s Ghost I didn’t hesitate for a moment.
As you can guess the movie has a link with Shakespeare, in this case through its main character Judge Vaughn (Walker Haynes), who’s an actor in a stage production of Hamlet. When he is driving his brothers girlfriend home something strange happens and from this moment on he regularly experiences being in another place and possibly another time. Add to that the fact that a police officer suddenly wants to question him about the past and the mystery only becomes bigger. He decides to go look for answers.
Hamlet’s Ghost isn’t a big budget production and doesn’t feature well-known actors, but despite that still manages to entertain by keeping the mystery of the situation going. The movie is far from perfect as the acting isn’t always strong and some of the dramatic moments felt like they lacked depth. Still writer/director and actor Walker Haynes succeeds to take the viewer through time in an interesting way. The ending of the movie left me with some questions and I didn’t know if the movie was supposed to do this. It might not belong among the best of the genre, but as a fan of these type of movie I still had a good time watching it.
