Places: Tony Montana’s mansion

After looking at a house from The Godfather (and The Bodyguard amongst others), the next place to visit is Tony Montana’s mansion from the 1983 movie Scarface. Let’s take a look.

The Movie

Scarface

Making his money in the drug business in Miami, Al Pacino’s character buys this impressive house. The decoration is lavish, with its red colors, marble stairs and the inspirational, iconic words “The world is yours” written in neon held up by a statue of three women. His office is located at the top of the stairs, with a big desk, various TV’s showing security footage and his initials painted on his chair.

It is the house where he marries Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer) and will ultimately meet his doom, defending himself.

The Place

As the movie is set in Miami, you’d expect the house to actually be located in there, but it isn’t. You would have to head to California, 631 Para Grande Lane, Santa Barbara to be exact. The house is called “El Fureidis” (“Tropical Paradise”) and was built in 1906 by James Waldron Gillespie. The archtiect was Betram Goodhue. The house was inspired by a yearlong journey he made through Europe together with Gillespie. It has four bedrooms, nine bathrooms, swimming pool and beautiful gardens. It currently is for sale and can be yours for a mere 35 million dollars.

Before buying it though, you would of course like to have look around and that’s possible through this virtual tour. As you can see the interior isn’t the same as in the movie. Reason for this is that all interior shots of the house were done on set at Universal Studios. So no recreating the “Say hello to my little friend” scene at the top of the stairs here.

  1. I love Scarface, but never any of this about the house. Thanks for this, great post. I might just start saving up my $35 mil. I’m starting pretty close to zero, so it might take a while, but wish me luck.
