Is it really still necessary to write reviews of Jason Stathammovies? If you have seen a couple of them and know you enjoyed them, chances usually are that you will want to watch his latest one. You know exactly what you can expect from a Statham movie: A tought, lonely man fighting a bad guy and usually is the last one standing. So basically the ultimate action hero. So is this also the case for Wild Card?
Jason Statham is Nick Wild, who works in Las Vegas and is mainly known as a bodyguard. When a friend of him is severely abused she asks him to find the man responsible. It will turn out to be the start of some difficult days.
If you are planning to watch Wild Card purely for the action, than maybe it is not the best Statham movie to pick as it only has three short action sequences. The rest of the movie is trying to create drama, with Statham in the center of it. It unfortunately doesn’t succeed as much as it wants to, which results in a film that doesn’t manage to play with your emotions and can’t quench your thirst for action. A subplot about a young gambler (played by Michael Angarano), who asks Nick to show him the city really doesn’t add anything to it and the way that plotline is closed doesn’t satisfy either. Even though Statham plays the role you’d expect from him, the end result is a frustrating film that doesn’t find the right balance between drama and action.
THE STATH!!!!
I really enjoyed this film because of Statham. Sure, it’s stupid as all hell, and basically a carbon copy of all his other films where he’s a good guy in a bad mood with a “special set of skills”, but I thought it was a bit of harmless fun.
Lately his movies have disappointed me a bit…or maybe I haven’t been in the right mood to watch them…
