My Filmviews Top 100 Films: 100-91

Top 100 Films My Filmviews
Sometimes you have these ideas which are easy to come up with, but where the execution takes more time than you’d initially would have thought. Making my personal top 100 movie list was one of them. I started making a list about two years ago, but never took the time to pick those hundred movie and secondly putting them in a specific order. Making an end of year top 10 is easy compared to that.

I had set myself the goal to finally finish the list this year and have now done so. Still I’m sure that if I would make this list again it would probably have some different titles or different placement of some films. A list remains a recorded moment. Something which I did notice when making the list is that the movies I have picked are from various genres and countries and doesn’t only consist of blockbusters and popular films.

To deliver a complete list of a 100 titles probably would be a bit too much, so for the coming weeks I’ll start counting down, ten titles at a time. This time the numbers 100 to 91.

100. Glengarry Glen Ross

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Glengarry Glen Ross[/mlprx]
If you are into great acting than this definitely is a movie to watch. The star studded cast consists of Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce and Alec Baldwin (who plays one of his best roles ever) and is all about an office with real estate salesmen. The speech that Alec Baldwin gives about his “brass balls” is a classic one.

99. Bus 174

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Bus 174[/mlprx]
This documentary about a hostage situation on a bus in Brazil isn’t only thrilling to watch, but at the same time is able to paint a clear picture of the problems within Brazilian society. By interviewing those involved (both police as people from the bus) and footage of the event itself (which were broadcast live) it is a movie you won’t forget any time soon. [My review]

98. Hanna

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Hanna[/mlprx]
That young girls can be dangerous is something Saoirse Ronan show in her role as Hanna, who is raised and trained to survive by her father, away from the world. When she decides it is time to leave the safety of the “nest” her instincts are useful, while she experiences new things in this strange world she doesn’t know. It has great action too, but the wonder she experiences is also entertaining to see. [My review]

97. Argo

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Argo[/mlprx]
Ben Affleck has proven himself behind the camera by making three very good movie. Of those Argo is my favorite. The story, based on historical events, is about a CIA agent (Affleck) pretending to be a director in Iran in order to save six Americans who are trapped there after the American embassy has been raided during protests. A movie which has a lot of tension, but also some funny moments thanks to Alan Arkin and John Goodman. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

96. Gandhi

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Gandhi[/mlprx]
By playing Ben Kingsley Gandhi gives a performance of a lifetime. It is an epic movie which takes the viewer through the life of Gandhi, from the moment he travels to South Africa till his death. With beautiful imagery, scenes which include hundreds of extras and a story about a man who was very important for Indian history, it is a movie that deserves rewatching from time to time. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

95. Seven Pounds

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Seven Pounds[/mlprx]
Not everyone takes Will Smith seriously as an actor and still see him as “The Fresh Prince”. Still he has played various serious and convincing roles in his career. Seven Pounds is proof of that. The story about a man with a huge secret who decides to help seven people improve their lives is an emotionally heavy movie, but inspiring as well. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

94. Grave of the Fireflies

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Grave of the Fireflies[/mlprx]
This movie has as much emotional impact as number 93, maybe even more. Don’t be fooled by the fact that this is an animated movie or that Studio Ghibli is responsible for it. The story about two children who are trying to survive the second world war in Japan is haunting. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

93. The Descendants

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]The Descendants[/mlprx]
George Clooney is one of those actors where you are almost sure that the movie will be worth watching. In The Descendants he is a man who finds out that his wife, who is in a coma after an accident, was seeing someone else. He decides to find the man, together with his daughters, while he also has to make an important decision about a piece of property his family has owned for a long time. The humour is fantastic and Shailene Woodley, who plays a rebellious daughter, made her mark. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

92. A Simple Plan

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]A Simple Plan[/mlprx]
When three friends find a bag filled with millions of dollars they decide to keep it and tell no one about it. This simple plan quickly becomes complicated. With that A Simple Plan is an enjoyable character study and shows what money and greed can do to people (something A Shallow Grave also did). Bill Paxton is great, but it’s Billy Bob Thornton who steals the show. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

91. Four Lions

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Four Lions[/mlprx]
It seems impossible, but Four Lions successfully makes jokes about terrorism. The group constantly makes stupid mistakes, which results in many laughs. Rubber dinghy rapids bro![My review]

What’s your opinion about these movies?

  1. I’m going to enjoy reading this list, especially for those films I have not heard of. Being in the US, we are unaware of a lot of the foreign–for us–films.

What was your process in determining the films and order? I’m guessing the Top-25 was easy, but after that it became difficult.

    • Well, it was quite an effort to make it. First write down the titles from the top of my head, then going through my DVD collection. Next looking at my IMDB voting history (which has over 2100 titles) and sorting it by rating. After having picked the titles I put them all in an excel sheet. Like you say the top ones are quite easy to order. For the rest I just decided out of two titles which I’d rather watch and kept doing that so specific titles moved up or down the list. Glad that’s done now and I only got writing the posts left 🙂

    • Thanks Daniel, hope you’ll find the rest just as solid 😉

It was a very interesting documentary. Good not to read too much about the event itself in advance as it makes it just as thrilling as a normal movie.

  2. Great to see you finally going ahead with the top 100! Nice variety of genres represented here. I love Grave of the Fireflies and Glengarry Glen Ross is awesome too. I vagely remember Simple Plan, I should give it a second look.

If available, could you link to the reviews please? Look forward to the rest of the posts in the countdown 🙂

    • Yeah, it was something I have been wanting to do for so long and it’s a satisfying feeling having finally done so. A Simple Plan is definitely worth a rewatch.

I will try to add reviews where they are available. Hope to have the next one up next week!

  3. Wow, this is quite an ambitious list Nostra! I find it so daunting to do a list like this. I still need to see Glengarry Glen Ross and a few others, but I really like The Descendants & ARGO. Looking forward to the rest of the list.

P.S. Since you asked about SHAFT on my post a while back, well my review of it is up 🙂
