Dwayne Johnson is one of those actors who, with his charismatic appearance, always adds something to the movies he’s in. In the disaster movie San Andreas he stars as a helicopter pilot.
The disaster movie is the type of film you don’t really visit for the story, but to experience spectacular and frightening situations in which people (except for the main characters) usually don’t make it. Those main characters in this film are Ray (Dwayne Johnson), his ex-wife Emma (Carla Gugino) and her new boyfriend Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd). Ray is planning a trip with his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario), but when a disaster strikes in the form of earthquakes he has to cancel it and get to work as he’s part of a rescue team. Those disasters are being predicted by new software made by earthquake expert Lawrence (Paul Giamatti) who tries to inform everyone. When Ray finds out that both his wife and daughter are in dangerous places which also experience earthquakes, he decides to rescue them.
Of course this regularly means the story goes into predictable territory, but that’s something that could be forgiven, because once the earthquakes start it’s nothing but spectacle. It is impressive to see whole cities move as the landscape is moving up and down even when it’s all being generated by the computer. There are sufficient moments in which there is a focus on the people and their response to the destruction. The personal relationships are the glue which hold it all together with Dwayne Johnson in the role of the hero that will save the day. It makes San Andreas an enjoyable movie, which delivered exactly what I was expecting: Tense moments, beautifully realised destruction and a nice role by Dwayne Johnson.
We didn’t all agree on how good this one but I’d say it was as disastery as a movie can get!
Yes, including a scientist who explains everything, an elderly couple realising they will die and have one last hug and many more
Spot on mate. I didn’t expect Oscar acting here, and I love The Rock as an actor because he’s just so awesome.
San Andreas was exactly what the poster told me it was going to be, nothing more, nothing less.
Exactly, it has exactly in it what the package says it has. And yes, The Rock is indeed awesome!
I am always excited to watch Dwayne Johnson’s movies even if he is not playing a lead role. His appearance is enough, and almost all of his films including Furious 7 are great source of entertainment. It’s like you just watched it, refreshes the mood and get back to the work, no big deal after 🙂 . I have watched “San Andreas”, and it is same as The Rock’s previous works (worthy) . The concept is similar to 2012 but visual effects were outstanding. And the character of The Rock is not less than any superhero, and it was stylish also.
