If you know a bit about Steve Jobs, than you are probably familiar with his “reality distortion field”, which he used to convince others that something which seemed impossible still could be done. In my opinion Tom Cruise is also able to use that same technique showing in Mission Impossible movies that he is able to execute great stunts, using them to win over the hearts of moviegoers. The latest Mission Impossible film, Rogue Nation was heavily promoted, showing him hanging on the side of a plane that is about to take off. Does Tom Cruise succeed again in keeping the attention of his audience
Times have changed for the IMF (Impossible Mission Force): Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is wanted by the CIA and the government is planning to abolish the organisation. This makes it almost impossible to do more missions, but Ethan is tracking “The Syndicate”, which basically is the anti-IMF which has been responsible for several accidents around the world which influenced the balance of power in the world. Ethan keeps discovering more information, but is captured by IMF en interrogated by Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who seems to have some secrets. By following various clues Ethan, together with his team, wants to uncover The Syndicate which takes him all around the world.
If Mission Impossible is known for one thing it is action and Rogue Nation is no exception. The movie opens with the much hyped “hanging from a plane” and delivers various high adrenaline moments like that including a motorcycle chase and infiltrating a secure environment. Although those moments are enough reason to see this film, the “reality distortion field” didn’t work on me this time. Of course the story never has been the strongest part in the franchise, but here it just didn’t pull me in. The bad guy felt weak (a problem the series has had before) and the missions didn’t make me feel the tension. I finally ended up leaving the cinema disappointed.
Think I enjoyed this one a little bit more than you, Nostra. But saying that, it’s been a couple of weeks since I saw it, and yet I don’t think I could recite to you the exact plot of the film. It’s an entertaining enough action film. But it got me wanting to go back and watch the first one again.
I’d rather see a previous MI movie as well (well maybe, not 2)
Understandably! Though, I have a weird soft spot for that film and it’s lunacy.
I’m sure I’ll find something to enjoy in this one but it was always going to be tough to follow that last Mission Impossible film which was arguably the best of the franchise.
I really enjoyed that one with various amazing moments.
I quite liked this one but I’m getting tired of Hunt having to go “rogue” all the time. He’s not an IMF agent for most of the Mission: Impossible films!
Yeah, he does seem to have to do that a lot 🙂
