Although I’m definitely not the target audience for young adult movies (even though I still feel like I’m young), I can still appreciate them. And just like in every genre there are good and bad movies. I quite enjoyed the first film in this series, but the sequels didn’t manage to convince me as much. Mockingjay Part 1 felt empty and not much seemed to be happening. After 3 movies it’s finally time for the last part. Does it manage to recapture the excitement of the first film?
The movie immediately continues where Part 1 ended and Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) will finally have to face president Snow (Donald Sutherland) by heading to Panem with a team. Before they reach their goal they will first have to face deadly traps and survive. Besides that Katniss still struggles with her feelings for Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).
This new part slowly builds tension and has a lot more action compared to the previous part. It has several exciting and spectacular moments. The movie slowly works towards its final showdown as the group gets closer to the presidential palace. Unfortunately it’s missing the climax you’d expect. Lot of time is spent on the journey through the city, but when they finally reach their goal everything just feels rushed.
The final battle actually doesn’t happen on screen, but is simply told by others. Because the most important moments feels like its missing the movie doesn’t have any impact emotionally. That’s very frustrating, especially with a movie that’s over two hours. Compare it to a roller coaster ride you are put in, where you are pulled all the way to the top and just when the ride is really about to start you open your eyes near the exit. Somebody else will then tell you how exciting it was and what you missed. Like I said, I might not be part of the target audience, but I expected more of this final part and left the cinema disappointed.
It definitely concludes a little abruptly, but I was able to look passed that. Great review!
Unfortunately I wasn’t. Good to hear you enjoyed it more than I did.
I’m definitely not someone who can appreciate them at all, and I’m always glad to see franchises conclude.
Well, I guess they will find a way for a spinoff or something…
Hi Nostra! I saw this last week but I don’t think I’ll bother reviewing it. It didn’t really do much to me even though I saw it at IMAX. This franchise’s been a diminishing returns since the great first film.
To be honest, I’ve actually forgotten what happened in Part 1, so I’ll have to Wiki that before I even think about watching this. The Hunger Games started solidly but has gradually become a train-wreck of commercial interest outstripping creative capacity.
Yeah, so did I! Luckily my daughter did remember and gave me a quick update.
Shame it didn’t manage to stay interesting.
Yeah, I can understand it. I didn’t bother watching it on IMAX (or 3D).
