The loss of a child is one of the worst things you can experience as a parent and unfortunately that is exactly what Lila (Viola Davis) experiences. Her son is shot during a drive by shooting. She decides to go to a meeting where for mothers who have experienced the same. Although she doesn’t like to talk she meets Eve (Jennifer Lopez), who lost her daughter. The two get along great, help each other and after a while decide to take action themselves and do the work the police doesn’t do…and more.
The two main actors were reason enough for me to check out this movie. Viola Davis is someone I always enjoy to see acting and also Jennifer Lopez has proved herself in various movies. The story strongly reminds me of a female version of Death Wish, in which the two of them have their revenge on someone who seems to be involved with the death of Lila’s son. It’s mainly Eve who takes the first steps, which often shocks Lila because she knows what it’s like to lose someone. She toughens up and like Eve no longer hesitates as much to take extreme measures.
Still this isn’t a movie that’s only about revenge. Also the pain she experiences and her relationship with her other son (and the bad choices he’s about to make) are also part of it. Together with the Lila and Eve relationship it gives this movie a heart. There are various surprises, even though the biggest one was a bit too obvious and could be seen coming halfway through the film. That took away a bit from the tension. Despite that Lila & Eve is an enjoyable is an enjoyable snack with drama, some humour, action and violence.
Nice review. I agree, Viola Davis is always good. And while I do question some of her film choices, I also agree that Jennifer Lopez is a good (and probably underrated) actress. This one interests me.
Thanks Keith. It’s not an amazing movie, but definitely has its moments.
