2016 Blindspot films

2016 Blindspot Films

Last year I joined the Blindspot tradition and watched 12 out of the 13 movies I picked. As I quite enjoyed the movies I picked I thought it was a good idea to pick some for this year as well. The ones I’ve picked this time are quite varied.

1. Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (1979)

nosferaturherzog
Last year I bought a Werner Herzog boxset and I still have too many movies in that set which I haven’t watched yet. Time to change that and this is the one I am really interested in seeing.

2. Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)

nosferatu
When I watch the Herzog version I of course also have to see the original. As it is described as “A cornerstone of the horror film” on IMDB it really is a must see. Also in order for me to compare it.

3. The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012)

Broken Circle Breakdown
This is a movie I’ve added as fellow bloggers thought it was one of the best movies they saw. Which is enough for me to check it out.

4. Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually
I’ve read so many people praising this romantic comedy, so looking at the impressive cast I decided to finally get around to watching it this year.

5. Russian Ark (2002)

Russian Ark
“2000 cast members, 3 orchestras, 33 rooms, 300 years, ALL IN ONE TAKE”. I’ve owned the DVD of this film for several years but still have not watched it. After seeing Victoria, my number one movie of 2015, I want to see what a 99 minute single take movie looks like with such a huge cast.

6. Jeux d’enfants (2003)

Jeux D'enfants
One of the first movies I’ve added to my IMDB “to watch” list and still haven’t seen.

7. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

An Officer and a Gentleman
A well-known movie which I’ve never seen. Interested in seeing some of Richard Gere’s earlier work.

8. Survive Style 5+ (2004)

Survive style 5
In 2014 Wild Tales was one of my favorite films, in which a couple of bizarre stories managed to surprise and shock. Someone suggested I’d check out this one as well, so I’m going to.

9. Pleasantville (1998)

Pleasantville
I once heard something about the concept of the movie (with the events taking place have an effect on the color of the movie) and I’m interested to see what that looks like.

10. Best in Show (2000)

Best in Show
Director Christopher Guest has a loyal fan following thanks to his various mockumentaries. This is Spinal Tap really wasn’t my thing, but I’m willing to try another one of his films.

11. The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

The Lady from Shanghai
Through the years I’ve see various Orson Welles movies, but not this one. A film noir I’m curious about.

12. La Femme Nikita (1990)

La Femme Nikita
Luc Besson doesn’t consistently make good movies, but this actionmovie about a femel assassin is one I’ve been meaning to see for a long time. That’s going to finally happen this year.

Which movies in this list have you seen?

  1. Nice variety! I’ve seen 7 of 12. Interesting you went with both Nosferatu films, they are quite different, I prefer Herzog’s. If it has appeal, there’s also a comedy based on Nosferatu called Shadow of the Vampire (2000), which is worth a look. Look forward to your reviews!

    • Thanks Chris, pretty impressive number you’ve already seen. I’ll remember Shadow of the Vampire (although I must admit this really isn’t my genre, so two might be enough) πŸ˜‰

  2. I’ve only seen a few of these: both Nosferatu flicks (though I can’t remember too much of the ’79 version so I need to rewatch), An Officer and a Gentleman, and Pleasantville. Looking forward to your thoughts on all, but especially that last one. I have a real fondness for that one.

  3. Interesting list! I’ve recently (re)watched and reviewed The Lady From Shanghai (I found it interesting but overrated, but others like it a lot), An Officer And A Gentleman (quite good, steamy, better than I remembered it from the first time I watched it), and Love Actually (reasonably funny and sweet enough for the ensemble multi-story genre). Enjoy!

  4. I’ve seen quite a few of these and you’re in for a treat, for sure (except for Survive Style 5+, which I didn’t like, although it does have its funny moments). Best In Show is actually one of my favourite comedies, Pleasantville is a really nice little film, Nikita is pretty cool from what I remember and Russian Ark is an incredible technical achievement. As for the others…my guess is as good as yours!

  5. With the exception of The Broken Circle Breakdown and Survive Style 5+ as I haven’t seen these films. I can recommend the rest of the films you picked except for Love Actually which I didn’t really like at all for some of the segments in that film.

  6. I personally can’t stand Love Actually, despite the fantastic cast, but like you say so many people love it that you might too! An Officer and a Gentleman is cracking though, I hope you enjoy it.

  8. I’ve seen three of your choices and have liked them. I usually watch Love Actually when the Christmas season is near, Pleasantville was lovely, and I don’t think I’ll forget the final scene of Jeux d’enfants. It was one of the first French films I’ve watched.

  9. Can’t believe I’m able to say this (usually Blindspot movies are completely out of my general experience) but I’ve seen Jeux d’enfants and it was creepy as hell! It was so weird and odd and… I’m still a bit shocked at it.. it’s been years since I saw it. I’m surprised I did but there’s something about French cinema, I just like to watch it!

  10. I have seen The Broken Circle, La Femme Nikita, Pleasantville, Best in Show Russian Ark and Love Actually. Funny enough, I have been trying to get my wife to watch Love Actually for a few years now. While I don’t have the same love for it that most seem to, it does fit the type of holiday romances that my wife usually watched over the Christmas season.

I had not heard of Jeux d’enfants or Survive Style 5 before but will definitely be seeking them out in the future.

    • Maybe you’ll get her to watch this year…don’t give up πŸ˜‰ I know the feeling though as the list of movies I want my wife to watch is way too long and we never seem to get around to seeing any of them. I’m happy if it’s 3 or 4 a year.

I don’t know much about those two either, but you’ll be able to read what I think of them.
