Finders Keepers (2015) – Review

Review Finders Keepers

True stories are sometimes too bizarre to seem real and this documentary is a great example of that. The entrepreneurial Shannon Whisnant bought a grill during an auction for a nice price. He took it home and to his horror found the lower part of a human leg on the grill. The police were called, who had to temporarily store it. The story soon appeared on the news and it was not long before John Wood came forward and claimed it was his leg and wanted it back. Whisnant however felt that it was his property and was not going to give it back. It would be the beginning of a long battle between the two.

Recensie Finders Keepers

The initial reaction to the story I had was the same as during the various news broadcasts: A freak show. Why would you want to save your own amputated leg? Why would you, when you find it by accident, not want to give it back? Both men have their motivations and the question is whether they will manage to get out of the situation. The largest part of this documentary consists of all the media attention the case got, which stretches the story a bit thin. Luckily the final act adds the necessary depth to the story by focusing on the back story of the two men and how the case ultimately also brought about some positive aspects. It is in this section that Finders Keepers is best. Is this a must see documentary? Not really, but sometimes such a strange story can be enjoyable to watch.
