I should hang my head in shame, but as long as I’ve been watching movies I had never seen A Trip to the Moon. Not because I wasn’t interested in seeing it, but simply because I didn’t free up time to look for it. It should have been on my Blindspot series, because it’s easily accessible through Youtube and with a length of only 16 minutes (for the restored color version) quickly watched. I’m happy to have finally seen it.
It’s hard to imagine that this is a film which was made when my great grandparents were still alive, the medium of film wasn’t even around as long as cellphones are now and that there was someone, Georges Méliès, who made the first science fiction film. A movie which, after 114 years, still impresses as it shows so much creativity. Not only the sets are impressive, but also the way it has been filmed. It is fun to see you the monsters on the moon disappear in smoke when they are hit and the image of the rocket landing on the moon of course is iconic. It is a movie which feels theatrical and that gives this film its charm. So if you have 15 minutes to kill than this definitely one to check out.
I can imagine it was an event in 1902, something nobody has ever seen before. And it still looks great today
Exactly. Thanks for your post on it, that made me finally watch it.
You should not feel bad at all! 🙂 A lot of people have seen bits of the film but much fewer can say for certain they’ve watched it all.
I guess that’s true 🙂
