We all know that the amount of news and information available to us is extremely high. So chances are that you might miss some stories. That was the case for me with this case around the American Amanda Knox. According to this documentary searching for her name on Google gives you 7 million results back, but I had missed all of it. Luckily you don’t need any knowledge before watching this documentary, which is available through Netflix.
The parties involved in the case often feel like they aren’t real. The prosecutor is a big Sherlcok Holmes fan, who seems to attach more value to little things than he should. When going to trial he is smoking a huge pipe. There is a reporter who makes it very clear that to him it’s all about being read, who very obviously loves it when juicy details are uncovered so he can put them on the front page. Someone who thinks that journalists shouldn’t always dig deeper or find out if information they receive is right, because else you run the risk of a competitor getting the story. These are just two people involved in the case of Amanda Knox, a girl who decided to go to Italy to find herself, to study and gain life experience. She lives together with British Meredith Kercher and quickly meets a boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. She spends lots of time with him, but when she returns from his place one night she makes a horrifying discovery. There is blood everywhere and her Meredith has been murdered. It is the start of a nightmare for her, which doesn’t only is looked at by the Italian justice system, but the world press as well.
It doesn’t take long before Amanda Knox and her boyfriend becomes the main suspect, but she keeps telling everyone she’s innocent. In very candid interviews she talks about her experience(is she a monster or has she experienced something you could go through as well), just as Raffaele, journalist Nick Pisa and many others. The case itself is told in all in its details. As a viewer you are constantly asking yourself various questions. This documentary succeeds in telling the case evenly and not picking sides, even though they had access to Amanda during the case. No matter what you conclude after watching this about her guilt or innocense, it is a strong documentary which kept me glued to the screen.
