When you do a quick Google search on this movie you quickly realize how many people think this is one of the worst ideas ever, which is also realized badly. Why would you add Tom and Jerry to a movie classic? Before watching it I was completely unaware of the controversy. The 1971 original has been a personal favorite of mine which I still enjoy watching. I watched a lot of Tom and Jerry as a child and as my daughter is also a fan of them (and hadn’t seen Willy Wonka yet), I decided to check it out, on a DVD which also contains 60 minutes of other Tom and Jerry shorts.
Of course there has to be a way in which to add the two to the story. The way that it’s done here is that Charlie sees how Tom and Jerry are hungry and he decides to help them. What happens next in this cartoon is pretty much the same as in the original film, with moments where you see what Tom and Jerry are doing, trying to stop “the bad guy” of the original film. Of course this movie isn’t as good as the original, but I still liked watching it. It’s just the original story with some added jokes. After seeing it, my daughter was interested in seeing the original because of all the candy, so this version did manage to creat curiosity.
