Most will know Donald Glover as an actor, but he is also an artist (Childish Gambino), director, writer, comedian and producer. He appeared in Community, The Martian, Spider-Man: Homecoming and for the Han Solo film he will play Lando Calrissian. So it is someone who has a busy life and also finds the time to make his own series in the form of Atlanta. A series that wanted to see for a while, but did not get around to. Luckily I had a long flight a while ago where the show was on the entertainment system and I could finally watch it.
Earn (Donald Glover) is friends with Alfred Miles (Brian Tyree Henry), better known by his rap name Paper Boi. Although Paper Boi has music, he is not known and Earn proposes to become his manager and help him by ensuring that his songs are heard on the radio. Together with Paper Boi and his strange roommate Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) they end up in various situations. At the same time Earn struggles with his relationship with Van (Zazie Beetz) with whom he has a daughter. Can he succeed as a manager and earn enough money to also take care of others?
If you had to describe Atlanta with one word, then it would be bizarre. It is a comedy series that has no fixed format (one of the episodes is a talk show with fake commercials in between), sometimes has surreal moments (an invisible car for example), but is almost constantly hilarious. In addition, Darius is my favourite character, who sometimes seems very stupid, but manages to surprise Earn from time to time. If I have one criticism is that this first season and the episodes were too short. That the series has a place in IMDb top 250 of best shows does not surprise me at all. Donald Glover has succeeded in creating a amazing series.
