The main reason I added this movie to my Blindspot movies last year was the fact that fellow bloggers told me I MUST see it. After I was absolutely blown away by another film they strongly recommended (The Broken Circle Breakdown), I was curious if this title would have the same effect on me.
When a common friend ends up in the hospital, the rest of the friends decide to continue their planned holiday despite that situation. However, they all have their problems and secrets that are threatening to break them apart during their holidays.
This French film has an impressive cast including François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard and Jean Dujardin. So there isn’t much you can critique when it comes down to acting talent and them showing emotions. Still, the film didn’t manage to move me at all. This is partly due to characters, who quickly start to get on your nerves and seem to have only one focus (one of them actually behaves like a young child who does not dare to take any decision and asks everyone for advice). This probably was meant to be comedic, but I was terribly annoyed by it.
Besides that, it is a very long, slow film, which made it quite difficult for me to get through. There was too little for me to latch onto which ultimately made this a long, disappointing watch(despite the fact that the film has enough emotional moments). The only thing I found impressive about the film was the opening shot. Basically, this was not a movie I enjoyed.
I saw this a few years ago, and while agree it is slow moving, I liked it. Some of the story threads are definitely stronger than others but ultimately I was pretty positive. But I can see it not resonating with some people.
Yeah, it is completely on my end that I didn’t like it as it is well made, but in the end I score the movies based on my enjoyment and this one didn’t resonate unfortunately.
