After just appearing together with Samuel L. Jackson in Captain Marvel, Brie Larson joins up with him again in the Netflix film Unicorn Store, which she has also directed. Is this a magical being you hope to see or just a horse with a stuck on horn?
Kit (Brie Larson) is an artist who lives in her own world and has her own style. Unfortunately, that style doesn’t appeal to anyone and is forced to stop her art studies. She decides to move back in with her parents and take a different approach to life by working in an office and leave everything she stood for before in the past. She starts to receive mysterious letters however, asking her to come to “The Store”, run by “The Salesman” (Samuel L. Jackson), who tells her that he can give her a unicorn. Before that can happen, however, she must complete a number of assignments to prove that she can offer a suitable home for a unicorn.
Unicorn Store is a strange movie that I never had a connection with. Brie Larson didn’t convince me of her character and the other characters didn’t work either, such as Kit’s boss Gary (Hamish Linklater) who reminded me of a character from Office Space but lacked the charisma to make him an appealing character. The whole movie felt too simple and was never funny. Larson simply failed to let me sympathize with what was going on. The magic was simply lacking, so it was easy to spot the glue on the horn the horse was wearing.

I completely get why people wouldn’t like this movie. I really do. I just ended up getting in with its weird quirky rhythm.
Maybe that’s the thing with movies like this that have very specific sensibilities, they simply can’t appeal to everyone. Happy to see you at least had a great time with it.
