Sci-fi is the ultimate form of escapism and there’s nothing better than sinking into the couch and enjoying a good movie after a hard day’s work. It’s one of those genres that can offer a little something to everyone, from viewers who like the visual mastery to those who are entranced by the detailed science behind it. No matter what type of sci-fi fan you are Netflix has a lot of variety to suit all tastes. Almost everyone has a subscription to this service (or access to one), so it’s a good place to focus on. With some assistance from the best sci-fi movie list from Film Oracle here are 5 great sci-fi movies on Netflix right now.
The Fifth Element
The Fifth Element is an eclectic mix of action, fun, comedy and sci-fi making it a fantastic watch. At heart it still contains all of the essential sci-fi elements a good movie needs. If you’re looking for a movie that packs in a lot and keeps you entertained throughout then the Fifth Element is for you.
Originally released without much fanfare or huge promotions in the 90s the movie has gained a huge cult following over time. Starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovavich, The Fifth Element has stored its place in movie history as a shining example of comedy and sci-fi done right together. If you’re unsure what that actually looks like on the screen, think of a bigger, wilder and more sciencey Die Hard!
Hellboy
Having had a popular revamp recently, Hellboy is a classic that you really have to go back and watch again. For those of you who don’t know, Hellboy is a comic book derived story about a demon from hell raised by humans. The character was raised to protect the humans from supernatural forces and the result is a visually stunning and very interesting production.
The original version which was directed by Guillermo del Toro who has since won an Oscar. You know from this that the work isn’t going to be low quality and it doesn’t disappoint. Put Hellboy on your list.
Black Panther
You’re not short of choice when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for science fiction. Netflix is currently home to one of the very best, Black Panther. The secretive African country of Wakanda is home to some of the most amazing, cutting edge technology the world has ever seen, and it is so much fun to watch the characters play around with it in thrilling and dramatic ways.
It is an amazing story of the balance of power being fought over in a sci-fi reflection of what’s happening in many real-world parts of Africa. Released in 2018 this is a newer addition to the sci-fi collection and definitely worth a watch if you want something visually crisp and sharp.
Under the Skin
You could be forgiven for only associating Scarlett Johansson with the Marvel universe due to her recent appearances. However, this time round she is featured on the list due to her appearance in the dark sci-fi thriller Under the Skin. Released in 2013 this movie explores the topic of undercover alien life on earth.
Although in this story the alien life takes the form of a young attractive woman, she stalks the streets picking up men for sinister purposes. If for nothing else, this movie is worth watching to see the diversity of Johansson’s abilities compared to her bright and fun Black Widow appearances.
Her
Her is a really interesting science fiction movie which takes a look at some of the ‘sad’ truths of modern life. We might not want to admit it but we are consumed with technology in a sometimes unhealthy way.
This story follows a man who actually falls romantically in love with his computer assistant. This story is of course straight up science fiction, but it makes you question our ever growing relationship with technology. At what point will we stop thinking of our virtual encounters as non-human interactions? A really interesting watch if you’re looking for a sci-fi film that will get you pondering.
