In Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie managed to stand out with her rendition of Harley Quinn. Therefore it isn’t surprising that DC decided to give the character her own film. Because despite the title, which refers to a group of female superheroes who fight crime (and also appear in the film), the focus is primarily on her. Does that result in an enjoyable film?
At the start of the film it becomes clear that Harley Quinn and Joker’s relationship has finished, something Harley isn’t dealing with very well. Because she was the Joker’s girlfriend, she was automatically protected. However, when she publicly announces her breach, it means that suddenly a huge number of criminals are looking for her. The most dangerous is Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), who is expanding his power in Gotham City and wants to get rid of her. Does Harley Quinn know how to stay out of his hands and how does she deal with a situation where everyone is looking for an important object?
Margot Robbie plays her role with full dedication and that is a pleasure to watch. Like Deadpool, Harley Quinn regularly speaks to the viewer and tells her story. In addition, there is some time jumping in a fun way when she has forgotten to tell some important information. Ewan McGregor is clearly having fun and the rest of the supporting cast is good as well. It results in an entertaining, sometimes very violent, film with a few entertaining set-pieces and there are hardly any dull moments. The end feels a bit weak, but despite that it’s an enjoyable viewing experience.

I was pretty disappointed in this. The trailers didn’t do much for me but I expected a little more story and character depth.
