The Netflix exclusive Spenser Confidential is already the fifth film in a row that director Peter Berg has made with Mark Wahlberg. After the terrible Mile 22 and with the thought in mind that generally Netflix movies (with a few exceptions) are disappointing, I decided to give this new title a try. I shouldn’t have.
Spenser (Wahlberg) is a former police officer who was sent to prison for attacking a superior. After receiving a “souvenir” from a fellow prisoner, he tries to return to society and rebuild his life. He stays with Henry (Alan Arkin) and has to share his room with Hawk (Winston Duke). When the man he attacked and went to prison for is found dead, together with another police officer, Spenser is immediately a suspect. He decides to find out exactly what is going on and to find the ones responsible.
The problem with this title is that it is in no man’s land when it comes to the story. On the one hand, it wants to be a raw detective-like film, but there are also various attempts at humor. However, it never is funny and some form of tension is missing. Add to that the weak story and the lack of chemistry between Spenser and Hawk and the result is yet another disappointing movie from Berg and Wahlberg.

I have no interest in this as I tend to think that Peter Berg is a filmmaker with no real identity as he wants to be Michael Bay but he also wants to be Paul Greengrass yet is unable to find a balance. Plus, you know the film is fucked when you see a cameo from Post Malone of all people and I can’t believe I have heard of that no-talent fuck.
Yeah understand your feelings about Berg. You’re not missing out skipping this one.
Hey Nostra, glad to see you’re still blogging. How’ve you been? Hope you’re coping well during the lockdown.
I haven’t seen this one and not really that interested to be honest. There are SO many options these days, so I’ve been bingeing on shows lately.
