While celebrities may appear all glitz and glam. They look unattainable and you wouldn’t for one minute think they cycle, never mind enjoy crocheting or knitting for fun. Yet, in reality celebrities are just like anyone else and have all manner of weird and wonderful hobbies.
Yes, you may well feel your on your own in a love of beekeeping or stamp collecting, but some of the world’s biggest stars may well share a love with you.
Below you’ll find some of the more interesting hobbies that you just would never think a celebrity would love…
Bez – Beekeeping
Bez was part of one of the most successful bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s, inspiring much of the Madchester scene with the Happy Mondays.
As one of the world’s most groovy dancers, few would have believed that the Mancunian is actually a keen beekeeper. Of his hobby, Bez once said, “It’s just a great soothing, restful, calming thing to do.”
“With such a fabulous bounty at the end. It’s not like gardening, you know, where you have to get your pitchfork out and really work. They look after themselves, bees. Bit like a cat, really. They just come in and go out, as the fancy takes them. But then they give you honey.”
He has long been a campaigner for the protection of animals, and during a stint running as a local MP in his home city, he was an advocate of urban beehives to help provide local communities with honey.
Catherine Zeta-Jones – Bingo
You can take the girl out of the valleys, but not the valleys out of the girl, and that’s certainly the case with her great love of bingo.
Yes, Zeta-Jones loves a game of bingo and every year will purchase custom bingo cards for a big game with family and friends at Christmas. It’s a great time to be alive for Catherine, with the bingo industry currently booming as online bingo and its many variants welcome hundreds of new players by the day. Which is probably just as well, as we can’t imagine there are many bingo halls out in Hollywood.
It’s a hobby that more and more young adults are picking up with many online bingo sites offering lots of useful resources (you can learn how to play bingo here), so the Welsh actress certainly isn’t alone in her love of this pastime!
John Lennon – Stamp Collecting
John Lennon may not be remembered for his excellent collection of stamps, but he certainly has one.
The Beatles legend was a keen philatelist before becoming one of the most iconic singers in history, and his stamp collection now resides in the National Postal Museum in the USA. We aren’t sure as to whether Yoko inherited his collection, or whether his love rubbed off on her, but one thing’s for sure, if there’s one thing you’d never have imagined Lennon was, it’s a stamp collector.
Rod Stewart – Model Railways
Rod Stewart likes to do things to the extreme. He has a full size football pitch in his home in LA, of which he flies his favourite Scottish footballers of years gone by to play against, but it’s his model railway which we really find fascinating.
He’s been building a model city and railway for over two decades and has build skyscrapers and ports to compliment the railway line. He revealed his hobby in a Railway Modeller issue and it really was a fascinating read.
Lily Allen – Cricket
Lily Allen is a lover of the cricket and you’ll often find her at Lords or the Oval watching the England side.
In an interview with the Test Match Special team she revealed she loves the slow rhythms of test match cricket, alongside the ebb and flow of a game that can grip you at any time.
She’s one of a number of celebrities who love cricket, including The Rolling Stones and Stephen Fry, who is often seen at test matches and also hosts a podcast with England star Stuart Broad.
Jason Statham – Diving
Diving isn’t just a hobby for Jason Statham. Before he became a huge success in Hollywood, he was in fact competing competitively, representing England at diving in the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He competed off the 10 metre, 3 metre and 1 metre board and was a member of the National Diving Team for 12 years.
Modelling came calling, however, and before he knew it he was starring in films such as Snatch, The Expendables and The Bank Job.
Leslie Mann – Unicycling
Leslie Mann may be one of the USA’s most recognisable comic actors, but a career in the circus could have been enjoyed with Mann able to unicycle!
She revealed to Oprah that she’d been practicing the hobby since she was 10 years old and can even do a range of tricks. We’d love to see a unicycle appear in one of her films some time soon.
Mike Tyson – Pigeons
Mike Tyson is perhaps more famous for his love of tigers, but he also has a penchant for pigeons and has kept them since he was young.
He found solace in pigeons and their calmness relieved his anxieties and he has over 70 pigeons at his home which he cares for.
Johnny Depp – Collecting Barbies
Johnny Depp is a lover of Barbies and has collected them since the birth of his daughter Lily-Rose. He even used them to practice voices for his roles!
The eccentric actor has continued his collection and has hundreds of dolls, many limited edition and worth a significant amount of money.
Joe Strummer – Running
The Clash frontman Joe Strummer died back in 2002 and during his time in the band was a keen runner. He ran three marathons, running Paris in 1982 and the London Marathon twice. It’s believed he ran the marathon in three hours 20 minutes, which is some feat, particularly given his rock and roll lifestyle!
Knowing that some of these famous people with their fascinating hobbies is proof that they’re quite real as I saw a clip of Rod Stewart and his trains. I haven’t been fond of his music for the past 25 years but I can’t help but be in awe of that train collection.
I never knew Jason Statham was a competitive diver and Catherine Zeta-Jones being an avid bingo player. That’s some cool stuff. I already knew about Mike Tyson and the late Joe Strummer’s hobbies but Bez and beekeeping? Bez has always been cool for life but this just makes him a million times more cooler.
I think when it comes to famous people, we tend to forget that they’re real people sometimes because they have lots of money and live in mansions. Yet, I think it’s the hobbies that keep them humble and interact with real people. Robin Williams was an avid gamer and was a really famous member of the World of Warcraft community as people knew who he was as a player but kept his identity private. When he died, that community honored him.
I also read that in Hollywood, Vince Vaughn is part of a group of famous people that likes to play Dungeons and Dragons. Jamie Lee Curtis has a hobby of playing board games as it’s something she likes to do with friends and family.
Speaking of the Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder who was notorious for his drug habit found a new addiction in cycling and it’s become a hobby of his as it kept him clean and fit.
Phil Collins is known for collecting artifacts and memorabilia relating to the Alamo.
It’s these little things that makes these people more enjoyable.
