The Monday Question: Best cinema!

Hello all, another Monday and time for a new question! Last week I wasn’t around these parts (so sorry for not replying to your comments yet) as I went on a well deserved break to attend a wedding int he UK. I stayed in London for almost a week and had a great time there. Since I’ve been there many times I did not do any sightseeing, but did other fun things like eating nice meals, doing some shopping and of course some movie related activities.

I went to the National Film Museum (which is near the London Eye) and it was nice to see some suits used in various movies and read a bit more about Chaplin and the British Film industry. I’ll have to admit though that I was slightly disappointed by it as I thought the presentation of it all could have been a bit better. Some of it came across as a bit messy (for example at the part where the various studios were described there were TV screens very closely together playing different things). The other thing I did was visit The Electric Cinema, which was stunning. Let me first give you an idea what this place looks like:

And let me assure you, it is as awesome as it looks. These are proper sofas which are extremely comfortable, there is a part where you can rest your feet on and if you feel cold there is even a blanket available. The movie I saw here was The Great Gatsby (which I will review at a later date), but it was one of my highlights of the trip and advise you to go there if you are in London (do make sure to book in advance as it is regularly sold out). It was also one of my best cinema experiences ever, so this week’s question:

What is your best cinema experience and in which cinema was this?

  1. Ironically, my best experience was simply the funniest.. The movie Legion wasn’t supposed to be funny but man, me and my friend were laughing out loud the whole time! There were only a few people in the cinema with us, all together less than 10, and half way through the movie, they started laughing with us (partly because my friend has a really funny laugh) because the movie was indeed ridiculous. I think those are the best cinema experiences, when you can make a bad movie turn into a good movie experience with your friend(s) and everybody else. (Luckily those people got onto the same page as us and didn’t shh us for laughing so much :D)

    • It is nice when that happens…movies should be fun to see (well, most of them) and when friends add to that during a bad movie then it’s well worth watching.

  2. So glad you had a great time, Nostra!

I haven’t been away my country but I will be coming to Australia to take up film studies (or maybe Literature). I’m hearing a lot of good cinemas to visit there. I’m from the Philippines, so I guess the closest to “The Electric Cinema” is a thing called “Director’s Club” wherein you only have about twenty other people watching, so it feels really VIP. They only send invites to actors, directors, critics and bloggers, and I’m lucky to be invited once. 😀

    • Yeah, it was great 🙂

Sounds very interesting, what is that club like? Does it have a special setup? Cool that you were invited to go there.

      • It is originally designed for corporate screenings (companies who have their movie day-offs or something), and only recently that it has become available to public. It has a really cool lounge where you can practically live the entire day in, and some La Z-boy recliners that feels amazing to sit on. Yep, it was cool.

  3. Some bad stuff been happening in London last week, Im sure you saw it on the news. Strange time.

As for your experience, wow that looks very posh!! The best I get is when I sneak into the VIP leather recliner seats at our local multiplex place 🙂

    • Yeah, I caught bits of it and although horrible it did not take away from my enjoyment of my holiday.

It was stunning…I’d almost be interested in setting up a place like that over here…I would be my own best customer 😉

Sneaking around! Hahaha, so you wait for the lights to go out and grab your chance 🙂

  4. Wow, that is a snazzy-looking theater. My favorite movie-going experience was when I got to see an advanced screening of The Master in 70mm with Paul Thomas Anderson in attendance. I think it was only the second or third screening in the entire world at that point, and the atmosphere was electric.

  6. Hope you enjoyed your trip over to these shores Nostra!

Unfortunately, it’s just bog standard multiplexes near me, so there’s nothing special about them at all unfortunately. I would love an independent cinema like that to go to. If I won the lottery, I would open a cinema like that, without a doubt.

    • I certainly had a great time. Did a lot of shopping and had some really good meals and visited a great wedding.

Shame that you haven’t got cool cinemas around, something which is the case here as well. I would join you with opening a cinema like that…

  7. This happened recently.

About a month or two ago the O-Cinema, a down and dirty art-house theatre–had a Stanley Kubrick retrospective. It was great watching “Dr. Strangelove”, “A Clockwork Orange”, and “The Shining” and a big screen, in a full theatre with like minded people, and talking to patrons in line before the screening and after.
