The third week in Mettel Ray’s Breaking Emotions Blogathon brings two new emotions: Smiles and Thrills. So comedy and excitement are the first two things I associate with those emotions, so time to pick three movies for each of these emotions.
It’s the first movie I had to think of. This was my favorite movie last year and for good reason: Its story was heart warming and brought to life in an amazing way. Important in doing so is the peformance by Omar Sy who is responsible for so many laughs. One great example is when his character goes to the opera for the first time and is in stitches when he sees someone dressed like a tree and starts making fun of it.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. The first time I saw this I laughed out loud a lot and that is something that doesn’t happen quickly (I guess I smile more). Of course it is endlessly quotable and there are many awesome scenes. I like the scene where Jeff Daniels character tells about how his parakeet is no longer alive. When Carrey’s character asks him why he says because his head fell off. The ketchup and mustard scene is a classic too.
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
For those who donβt know the movie, it is based on an old Chinese Kung Fu movie which was completely dubbed (badly and on purpose) by Steve Oedekerk (who did almost all the voices). He also inserted himself into the movie resulting in a very weird, but to me extremely funny movie. This is one of those movies you either love or hate, there really is no middleground. It is endlessly quotable. One of my favorite scenes is when Master Tang talks about what his master told him. You see a flashback and then you hear the master just repeat the exact same words Tang just said.
Yes, this is a movie I already picked during an earlier entry (for the emotion surprise), but this is one hell of a thrilling movie. In her post Mettel Ray talked about adrenaline pumping and this movie surely managed to do that for me. So much so that I still felt it after I left the cinema. So I just had to include it here.
Like Fast and Furious 6 this is also a thrill ride, but a completely different one. When a remote oil field blows up, the fire needs to be extinguished. In order to do so an explosion with nitroglycerin needs to be detonated, but there is not any of it at the site. Two trucks have to make the very perilous journey across bad roads in order to reach their destination. As the nitroglycerin can explode by just a slight bump in the road this movie offers thrills in another way.
A movie which offers only one thing: Action. It’s almost a constant assault on the senses and it had me swearing loudly because of the awesome action and fights I was witnessing. This is action distilled to its purest essence.

Damn, I still have to see The Raid, I almost watched it this summer but then the plans changed and I didn’t. Now I want to see it again.
Make sure to watch it before the next one is coming out π
Oh man, Kung Pow is a fucking guilty pleasure. It is so fucking silly yet so goddamn funny. “I’ve got something to say to you… I really like the band ‘Nsync. My favorite member is Harpo. I think there’s a Harpo. Anyways, I will write their next hit. It will go boom-boom-chika-chika-boom-boom”.
It is, isn’t it π
I’m glad you chose The Intouchables. When I went to see that movie, I was expecting it to be very depressing, and not at all the fun little film I saw. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
I was not expecting anything as it was part of a festival so I had no idea what kind of movie it was. It was my favorite that day. Really want to watch that one again π
Excellent choices, Nostra. Kung Pow is very hilarious and silly, just couldn’t stop laughing (but I didn’t finish watching for some reasons). Intouchables brought lots of smile, laugh and heartwarming feeling too. Love that you picked The Raid, that’s a very thrilling movie.
Thank you Andina!
Great choices! Still haven’t seen The Raid but now I want to see it even more!
You really should David, it really is awesome!
