How to train your dragon (2010)

How to train your dragon is the next movie from Dreamworks,  who is known for movies like Shrek, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar. After reading about the very positive feedback Slashfilm gave i had to see this in the cinema in 3D to see if it deserved the hype.

The movie is set in a small viking village which is plagued by dragons. Hiccup (Jay Baruchel)  is the son of the town’s boss (very recognizably played by Gerard Butler, who seems to reprise his role from 300). Hiccup isn’t strong and is kept away from battle. When he gets old enough however he also has to follow the dragon training. By sheer luck he manages to hit and bring down the most feared dragon. It turns out not everything is what it seems. When he finds the dragon he names it Toothless. This character has the charm that you normally only see in Japanese animation.

The use of 3D in this movie is fantastic and during one of the flying scenes i really got the sense of falling. So they were able to use it effectively. But my opinion about 3D movies (see 3D films : The future of movies or just a gimmick?) that you don’t miss a lot when you watch it in 2D does not change.

Both story and characters are great and there are many funny situation. Although there might be bits that might be scary for the little ones I do think it’s a great family movie, which can rank among the other mentioned Dreamworks movies.

Score : 8
