Woody Allen’s Annie Hall ranks high within the IMDB top 250 (it’s on place 132 at the moment). I heard it was one of the best romcoms around and the it won the Oscar for best movie, beating Star Wars. After reading about these facts i just had to see this movie. You can imagine my expectations were very high.
In the movie we follow the life of Alvy Singer, who is obsessed by death (he has to buy every book that has the word death in its title). It shows the relationships he has with women, especially Annie Hall (singer and photographer), played by Diane Keaton. The relationship between the two is followed over a big time period, including the problems they face and the several breakups they go through.
During this movie Woody Allen breaks through the fourth wall by directly talking to the viewer (something he also did in What’s up, Tiger Lilly?) Sometimes this leads to funny situations (like when they are waiting in line at the cinema and someone behind him is criticising some movies).
When I have to give my opinion about the movie as a whole I have to admit that it’s a really clever movie that’s been edited very well. It contains lots of funny moments and you can see the influence it had on other romantic comedies.
Personally though, I just couldn’t get into the movie. Maybe it was not my type of humour or something else which I can’t put my finger on, but that’s the reason I have given it a low score.
If you like the genre then it’s definitely a movie you should watch. In that case the score below does not matter as much.
Score: 6
My sentiments exactly. It even surprises me for my opinion is just the same.
Funny, always nice to see other people sharing the same opinion about something.
